How does poverty affect us?

Does rampant poverty affect those who are not poor? If you live in a fairly wealthy area, does the poor area next to yours have an impact on your life? If you live in the developed world, does the poverty of billions of people affect your life? Should poverty be eradicated strictly on moral and humanitarian grounds (because after all do I deserve to live with all my basic needs met more than a rural peasant in Sierra Leone or a person in the slums of Nairobi?) or are there pragmatic and "selfish" reasons for fighting poverty?

Hi Sarah, you made every vital point here which I would say has been look down on, absolutely if a particular region is rich, it will attract and an envy to those living in poor region which always are the major cost of people migrating from one region to another. I was not even surprised seeing Spain, France and other being worried because of migration which poverty ofcourse generates the force migration.
As people normally say "no place is better than home", i mean if you home is confortable for you; will not even have time to think of force migration and that is why I should say it is not a selfish reason fighting poverty entilely. Travelling is good, then guess the different when a friend is coming to you empty maybe because of unconfortablity/ force migration in h/her own region and when h/her is coming to you prepared, i believe there is a great difference.
So what I'm saying is, if I'm visiting someone prepared, there will ofcourse more understanding and respect that will level ground for associating and welcoming, as well will promote development among the two parties.

Well,
I agree with your both opinions. But for those who lives in poor countries (like me), the poverty is just in front of us. It's shocking and revolting to see people begging for food and money... I'm sure that it's not their fault and I'm shure also that this problem is increasing even in rich countries.
When people left their countries is not because in others we have better conditions, but because the situation on their countries is such unbearable that the only exit is the migration.
Other question should be proposed: Why does the povery is increasing and expanding?
Best Regards,

Poverty impacts all of us in some manner or the other.
There are days when I think that there are some things that i cannot afford . And i feel helpless. I also feel determined to get what i want. But thats probably because I have lived with all my support systems and resources around. If I did not have access to these..i would probably feel much more helpless.
In cities of India, when I see a child begging of selling something to earn a bit of money, I often feel helpless. Thats because the problem is so huge that i don't see an end to it.
On the streets, people do learn how to live one day at a time. But there is a lot of abuse, lack of safety and dignity that one has to live with. At the same time, many of us ignore that person on the street. We "invisiblise" the person and his/her rights. Even by doing this, poverty is affecting us in a manner.

Poverty affects us all since we bear its social and financial costs. Discrimination, orphans and abandoned children, lack of employment, educational failure and many others are all related to poverty.

Guilt could be one aspect. Safety being the other one. Generally where the poor are, the crime is at it's highest, therefore housing prices go down and property isn;t well taken care of. I don;t think anyone benefits, unless their awareness of poverty is hightened which insites them to help the poor.

There are excellent reasons to remove poverty that do not lean on morality for support.
1. Market. There are 2 billion people in India and China alone. That's an opportunity no sensible business ought pass by. A market does not exist without purchasing power. Poverty is eradicated as purchasing power grows.
2. Stability. Poorer regions are more unstable. No country that has been doing well economically and feels financially secure has ever gone to war.
The same correlation applies to poorer neighbourhoods and crime rates.

I dont think there are pragmatic reasons for fighting poverty. This is because none of us wants to see our next door neighbour suffer or embrace hostilty tendencies as a result of total lack of basic needs.Would any of us want to be subjected to abject poverty?i dont think so.Would it be right for people to fight poverty out of selfish reasons?i dont think so,we all want to leave in a secure environment, poverty brings insecurity and not only social insecuriy bt personal insecuity where by poor persons hold themselves with low esttem.I would be glad to see everyone content and able to access basic facilities.

My economics class has been concentrating on poverty recently and i made a survey to try and gather information regarding poverty all over the world. If anyone has the time to take it, it would be greatly appreciated.

I think poverty is an extreme issue which needs to be solved.
Please take my survey on how Capitalism affects the poverty level in Latin America. [link="http://research.zarca.com/k/SsQYUSsQSRsPsPsP"]

I am a senior in high school and was wondering if you could take this survey about how Capitalism affects poverty in Latin America. I believe poverty is an issue that needs to be addressed immediately.

I feel that we never want to see our neighbors live in poverty, whether it is out of gulit or kindness it is true all over the world. To be honest i feel that poverty does not affect everyone. For instance it does not affect me. I live in a community that does not have much poverty so it is not around me on a daily basis. So i beleive that poverty does not affect everyone around the world. Yet it is natural to feel insecure about poverty and would rather not have it around us.
