Globaliazation failing the youth..
January 15, 2007 - 02:41 PM

Surfing through net stumbled upon this report...

Geneva - The number of unemployed 15 to 24 year-olds has risen sharply over the past decade, leaving about one-third of the world's young people without jobs or in abject poverty, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) said.

In a report on "Global Employment Trends for Youth", the ILO warned that global economic growth was failing the young. It said about 400 million "new and better" jobs had to be created worldwide to resolve the problem. People in the 15 to 24 age group are three times as likely to be unemployed as older adults, especially in developing countries where they represent a larger proportion of the labour force, it added.

The number of unemployed youths, who are one of the most economically productive age groups in society, rose by 15 percent to 85 million between 1995 and 2005, according to the ILO.

It seems that,at least as this report suggests, youth are "loosing" ... What is going on wrong or what must be done to overturn the situation?

Is globalization failing the youth ... ? No, I don't think so, on the far contrary it has allowed us youths to have a greater ans far deeper insight into our world. Through Globalization we can learn about each other and so very easily move in-between the economies and cultures of the world. We can have a work experience of a lifetime in a Chinese school teaching English, we can learn abroad in countries we always wanted to visit.
Far from making us ''youths'' more restricted and failing it us, we have the opportunitIES to learn (and cheaply) about our world. We can go anywhere we want and pick up small employment. This gives us more knowledge than any of our fathers would have been able to have.
For those who have been stuck at home ''whining'' about foreigners always ''taking'' our jobs, we can just as easily go into their country and ''take'' theirs. that is the beauty of globalization. Don't let ourselves be old fashioned and cynical, we can think of endless ways to use globalization to our wonderful advantage. More imaginative ways than this quick and simple post by me !!! stick out tongue

Reading the article they talked about the fact that even education isn't helping to employee the youth of a global society. I'm wondering if the the Age bracket they are looking at isn't distorted by the fact that as education standards increase so do the amount of years spent in education. 24 is not an unreasonable age to graduate from college if you are looking at a master or even a bachelors with any traveling experiance

That is a very good point mmuttitt. The article also talks about SE Asia being particularly hard hit, but the past decade has been pretty difficult for everybod in this part of the world with the aftermath of currency crisis and lack of investor confidence as a result.

But I agree that the general point of the article does suggest that Globalisation is failing the youth. confused
