Wow! Tough question. I think the Human Rights still apply to them. They need protection as much as we do. Although they may not be aware of what's happening around, I believe they have a place where they can also enjoy the beauty of life.

Mental health is not just about presence or absence of mental illness. People with mental illness are one part of the work in the field of mental health.

Though people with mental illness have right to be treated with respect and dignity, the reality always does not ensure that.

The psychiatric care institutions seem to be there more to "protect" the society rather than people with mental illness.

People with mental illness also face infringment of thier legal, social and political rights.

In India, once you announce that you have mental illness, your partner may get divorce on that basis, you may not be able to do anything with your property except owning it, you may not be legally allowed to sign any contract and hence you actually cant to much legally.

Many people, therefore feel stigmatized because of thier illness and the attitude of the society.
