[Poll] Will the war on Iraq effect other countries?
March 28, 2003 - 12:47 PM

I think the war on Iraq is going to affect other countries because America and Iraq are both major nuclear countries(meaning they have nuclear power)and if you live near one of this places if a missile hits one of these countries by mistake and that country would be in turmoil.

please give your thought and ask others to give their thoughts too.

I'd disagree with the statement that Iraq is a major nuclear power - firstly, they don't have nuclear power plants, and they also don't have nuclear weapons (since they ARE innocent until proven guilty, if that happens)... the probability that the US would use a nuclear weapon against Iraq is zero at this point.

What's more likely is a terrorist using a suitcase nuclear bomb or a "dirty" bomb that would spread radiation over a large area. At this point, the vast majority of states won't consider using nuclear weapons because of international opinion, that is against their use.

A qualification to that last message - the Iraqis *did* have nuclear power plants before they were bombed during the first gulf war, I'm not sure what their status is now.

There's lots of interesting info about dirty bombs and the nuclear threat on the Federation of American Scientists website, http://www.fas.org/index.html.

The funny thing is that France has been supplying Iraq with nuclear technology for a while for their ex-nuclear plants, and the US supported Saddam during his war on Iran from 1980-1988. It's interesting to see how the tides have turned; the US will support Saddam when it suits them, but now he's the villain. The US probably didn't know about Saddam's psychotic policies back then, but it still looks like a giant chess game to me...

According to the CIA fact book (which is governmental so i wouldn't trust it too much) located at

http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/iz.html

Iraq has NO NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS!!!!! all their energy is generated from fossel fuels except 2% which is from hydro power.

For heavens sake, France is a bigger threat than Iraq. Russia is a bigger threat than Iraq. China is a bigger threat than Iraq. France has Nukes. Russia has Nukes. China has Nukes. Why don't we go bomb them?

Also there is no evidence to say that Iraq has nuclear weapons. The US has said over and over again that there is undeniable evidence of weapons of MASS DESTRUCTION not weapons of NUCLEAR POWER. The weapons the US is talking about are biological and chemical weapons and I personally believe Saddam has these. The reason is that the US government GAVE these weapons to Saddam when Iraq was fighting Iran!

No one can deny that Saddam is a threat to international security and that he must be disarmed. However I would argue that by pre-emptively attacking Iraq, the US has made itself an even bigger threat than Iraq EVER was. I personally believe that Iraq now has a right to attack the US and I could easily see this escalating into WW3.

The main point I am trying to make is that although Iraq is a threat, the US is a greater threat. We may claim we are "protecting international security" but all we are doing is becoming international terrorists.

DISSARM THE US FIRST!!!!!!!

----Shawn

I think, it will effect on other countries because some family members are in Iraq and some family members are in other countries. The families that are in other country and the relatives of them are in Iraq they will be very worried about them.

I think that you have a very good point. If Iraq did try to hit the U.S. with nuclear weapons, they could easily land in Canada! That's a really disturbing thought!

Iraq couldn't hit the US with nukes even if they did have them, though - they don't have missiles with a sufficient range.

On Iraq & Nuclear arms

To offer some clarity to the postings on Iraq and the issue of it's nuclear capabilities, it was recently concluded by the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) that Iraq possesses no nuclear weapons whatsoever.

Thanks for pointing that out, Jacob. I'd say that the war in Iraq won't affect the US because of an attack by another country's military - the chances of that are slim to none. The biggest thing that will arise from the ashes of this war will be an increase in terrorism...

Also, I'd say that other countries (especially "Axis of Evil" countries) will be nervous because they might be next on the US' list of targets...

In answer to the question of whether this war will effect other countries, the answer is a resounding yes.

No conflict, no matter how distant or apart from the world and its gaze is free from impacting upon each and every one of us. Trying to believe otherwise only adds to the tragedy. If there is suffering, there must be global concern. We cannot pretend to exist in an advanced society if we ignore our responsibilities as global citizens.

That said, the pure economic consequence speaks enough about its impact on the world. Noticed how oil prices are going down? Iraq doesn't even significantly impact the world's oil supply at present and wont for decades, yet the markets are loving this war.

My greatest fear is not if it becomes a guerilla war but if it becomes a war between two unequals, just like in Israel and Palestine - where self-sacrifice is an accepted method of resisting the influence of the powerful military.

The repercussions of this conflict will be long and far-reaching.

Of course the war will affect other countries. As predattack pointed out the oil prices have already dropped. This is only one prospect the war has. When wars occur it is not only the people of that country who are affected but their families, wherever they may be. Then there are of course the men and women in the armies and their families. Of course we cant forget the reporters, and peace activists, some of who have been killed and why? They were just doing their job, right? Governments are involved whether it be for supporting the war or not. There are protests against and for this war in many cities across the globe. There is the fear that many Americans, British, and Canadians are experiencing --> the possibility of nuclear warfare. I’m not saying that Saddam, has “weapons of mass destruction” but since Bush thinks this is true, where’s the proof? War effects are inescapable. Wherever you live you hear about it 24/7. This war concerns everyone because it is an immoral act on society. The question should be what will WE as humankind DO about it?

this war will affect other cuntries because other countries are dependant on iraq for theor oil supply. You can also notice that the price of gas at the gas station has increased significantly
