America

They say we are split
Everyone is something else American
And American is yet something else
And not all like the term American
Does American really mean what it says
Or does it take away our voice
Or have we taken away our voice from ourselves?
We say we are this Race
Or that Race
Or this ethnicity
And all of that makes us
Our complexion is established on the face of life
Torn we lie together on the flesh
Which is warm and soft and yet still scar covered
From the havoc which we wreaked on it and forced
Our hand down on the table
So I say it is not as important as this
That we are not so divided as not to think we are different
So much as we are all the same and we make up
That vortex of parallel logic which we call
The Future.

my favourite and my most hated american president.
favourite - he was like a wise old man, capable of citing literature to justify his actions. acted everyway the gentleman, but like his country, his policies and his people - he had his dark side.
most hated - did things for the flag. not the people.

Judging out of context?

Indeed JFK used the CIA to put in the Baath Party in Iraq (Saddam Hussein's party) and escalated the involvement in Vietnam, however he was fighting the Cold War. He did not have the historical perspective to see that what would work in Western Europe would not apply to other parts of the World. Perhaps he is being judged by too modern a standard.
Also, JFK started the Peace Corps, advocated Civil Rights (though he was too unpopular with Congress to get it passed), and boosted the space program. Most important, he handled the Cuban Missile Crisis without starting WWIII.
While the baby-boomers probably over-idolize him, we are all still here today because he made the right decisions where it REALLY mattered.

Certainly the space program was an element of the Cold War. In another post I commented that in a Monopoly game everyone tries to get Boadwalk and Park Place. The US and USSR thought of the moon as Boardwalk and the oil rich Mid-east as Park Place.
We have to remember that Stalin ran the USSR during the Cold War. He was NOT a philanthropist. We often apply today's "politically correct" lenses without considering historical context.
JFK was definitely a Cold Warrior. However, he was forward thinking enough to get the Limited Test Ban which stopped everyone from putting nuclear weapons in orbit. He was also able to inspire young people to serve the greater society and community at large.

i always considered kennedy to have inspired americans to work *for* america.
and why did he do that? because he thought america was the only thing worth working for.

Khruschev did not start a Peace Corps. Khruschev did not advocate for the rights for oppressed minorities in the USSR. Certainly JFK was pro-America (as most Aussie PMs are pro-Australia), but he brought a wider perspective at a crucial time.

Hope your finger feels better soon. :-)
I was trying to point out that ALL leaders will be partisan for their own nations. When a leader is able to do something larger they should get credit.
