Re: why are some school better then others

I personally blame grades and test scores. For me, when going to school I had the option of either getting straight A's and taking regular level classes, or taking advanced classes that were more challenging but getting lower grades. I personally wanted to challenge myself. I think students in general aren't challenged enough so necessary background information and reasoning skills aren't developed. They are just given curriculum based on what will be on a test without be given the practical uses and indepth explanations for it, so there's an overall lack of interest and understanding for it. Both teachers and students seemed so focused on grades and test scores that they focus on remote memorization instead of developing minds and concepts. For instance, students are taught when basic alegebra 2x+3=9, what's x. The concept may be drummed in, but when faced with word problems that give real life applications, students have greater difficulty identifying variables because they aren't taught as much abstract thinking and application processes.
