When women are trafficked who should we prosecute?
December 19, 2006 - 02:44 PM

When females are trafficked as sex slaves, who should be prosecuted the trafficker, the ones who force the girls into prostitution or the clients, the ones who pay for sex, or both?
Me personally I believe that it all depends on how informed the client is on what is going on to decide if they are charged with rape or soliciting sex.

They should all be prosecuted - the severity of their punishment should be in relation to their part in the crime

i believe all are liable to prosecution and a severe punishment, to deter others and protect the women from being used as sex and money making machines.
also becoz trafficking of women or children is a crime accorfing to UN convention on transnational crimes.

Before we ask, who should we prosecute, maybe, we should ask first how are women trafficked? If we say sex trafficking is it automatic that women are forced? Considering that these women are forced, then patrons/clients, the master-mind, and the accessories to the crime.

YES i am in total agreement that all involved need to be held accountable!! My personal opinion is that NO woman would make this a life choice, they are ALL forced. The only time that a woman would choose to let herself be trafficked in this manner, is if the options back home are far worse.

We are actually learning about this in my Sociology class. No one really can imagine how these women are really treated unless you are one of them. We are watching the move "Highway trafficking" to get a more of an inside view. The events are traumatizing and very sensitive. I myself was almost not able to watch the rest of it because of the impact, but I realized it was life and there are many cruel people out there. The world is corrupt, I always knew... just didn’t know how corrupt it was.
If you think about it, it is the customers who buy these slaves, and thus, since they pay so much, they are the ones keeping the business active. Thus, they should be the ones prosecuted. Trafficking is even a bigger industry then the drug industry. You can sell drugs once.. But a woman, u can sell over and over and over again. People are desperate 4 money, and this is the fastest way they can imagine. Some woman do chose to be prostitutes, they make quick money, and they enjoy that "adrenaline rush" others are desperate to support there families. However, NO woman chooses to be a sex slave.. it is immoral, wrong, humiliating, and undignifying. =(

This exerpt is from wikipedia,....I think it reveals some of the bitter realities of our real world:
US State Department data “estimated 600,000 to 820,000 men, women, and children (are) trafficked across international borders each year, approximately 80 percent are women and girls and up to 50 percent are minors. The data also illustrate that the majority of transnational victims are trafficked into commercial sexual exploitation.” [5]. Due to the illegal nature of trafficking and differences in methodology, the exact extent is unknown.
An estimated 14,000 people are trafficked into the United States each year, although again because trafficking is illegal, accurate statistics are difficult. [6] According to the Massachusetts based Trafficking Victims Outreach and Services Networkin Massachusetts alone, there were 55 documented cases of human trafficking in 2005 and the first half of 2006 in Massachusetts. [7] In 2004, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) estimated that 600-800 persons are trafficked into Canada annually and that additional 1,500-2,200 persons are trafficked through Canada into the United States. [8]
In the United Kingdom, 71 women were known to have been trafficked into prostitution in 1998 and the Home Office recognised that the scale is likely greater as the problem is hidden and research estimates that the actual figure could be up to 1,420 women trafficked into the UK during the same peroid. [9] Trafficking in people is increasing in Africa, South Asia and into North America.
Russia is a major source of women trafficked globally for the purpose of sexual exploitation. Russia is also a significant destination and transit country for persons trafficked for sexual and labor exploitation from regional and neighboring countries into Russia, and on to the Gulf states, Europe, Asia, and North America. The ILO estimates that 20 percent of the five million illegal immigrants in Russia are victims of forced labor, which is a form of trafficking. There were reports of trafficking of children and of child sex tourism in Russia. The Government of Russia has made some effort to combat trafficking but has also been criticised for not complying with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking.[10] [11]
