[Poll] Hey UN! what are u doing?
December 19, 2006 - 08:18 AM

this thread is in result of karzai's blame on pakistan, the situation in most of the countries including afghanistan and iraq, kashmir and sudan... and israel announcing Nukes.

can u say what exactly UN, UNSC is doing in this situation?

well, i think it is follwing its predecessor, the League of Nations. = punish or condemn the weak and allow or work for interests of powerful and is more and more dependent on powerful states.

say ur say!

First, as much as League of Nations was an American idea (W. Wilson's) the US didn't quite partake in it and so it sank...

Second, a lot depends on the Secretary-General of the UN.

In the face of major challenges such as terrorism, genocide in Sudan and the threat of nuclear-weapons development in Iran, Annan has been weak and inept. On his watch, even the United Nations' own employee union adopted a resolution of no confidence in senior management.

He should have resigned for the management failures that allowed the massive oil-for-food scandal, by which Saddam Hussein corrupted a program aimed at providing Iraqis with food and medicine.

Annan, during his final speech, mentioned perhaps the United Nations' finest moment: When it authorized a military response to North Korea's invasion of the South. Yet that action took place only because the Soviet delegate was not present to cast the expected veto.

Russia remains a problem today as the international community tries to address concerns like dangerous Iranian weapons programs. China, France and other prominent members of the United Nations also routinely undermine effective international action.

In conclusion, the UN is just another international organization with a big apparatus of bureacracy and an unclear and faltering vision which depends on a context and mood of many leaders of countries.

Reminds of the League of Nations!

it means that the UN role is very much clear, specially after the US attac on afghansitan when they tried to justify the attacks by sending ISAF forces to the country. if they did not allow the attacks why it came under pressure and asked for members to send forces. and then asked them to work under the command of US operation of enduring freedom?

these are the issues which makes the situation very much ambigous.

Hey, Hatam:

The Washington Post reported on a poll by ABC News/BBC World Service in Afghanistan. The poll results were interesting:

1) Only 10% of Afghanis have favorable opinion of Taliban.
2) 88% prefer Karzai's government to Taliban's 3%.
3) Afghani confidence that things are going in the "right direction" are strongest in areas the government is strongest (in those areas, 71% think so), in the areas where the government presence is weakest, only 39 % think so.
4) 70% of those polled say Karzai's government has a strong presence where they live.
5) 75% of Afghanis polled are grateful for American, British and Canadian troops in their country.
6) 88% say the U.S. supported toppling of the Taliban was a good thing.
7) 60% of Afghans want US troops to stay until security is restored.

The article points out most of these levels of support (for the U.S./Karzai efforts) were HIGHER last year, so the Taliban's insurgency is eroding the Afghani's enthusiasm. All of this doesn't justify America's invasion, but it does suggest the invasion was and still is quite popular with the Afghanis themselves.

Most Afghans I have spoken to have similar views.

It's only those that live in the country's hostile eastern neighbour that think otherwise.

i dont agree with you. and if any of these are true its because everyone was thinking of a peace and protection in afghanistan after the taliban regime but now day by day no security no peace. i think these figures have changed too much now.

Who is responisble for "no security, no peace"?

It's the Taliban funded and trained by Pakistan's ISI. I am sure the Afghans don't want the Taliban in power.

The UN has greatly changed from the League of Nations. If you looks today at the UN and compare it to the League of Nations you can see many differences, although there are many similarities. The reason the UN doesn’t seem to work as well as some would like is because of the Veto that the 6 (correct me if I am wrong) Powers have allowing them to oppose any idea they dislike. Russia and the US have both used the Veto often, sometimes for political reasons, others for economic. But what can you have the UN do, without granting the powers the veto they might not support the UN as much as they do. The UN is a generally young organization and has many flaws. In my opinion the UN needs more support from countries around the world, and needs to create new ways to intervene with different global problems. But to compare the UN back to the failing League of Nations is an insult to the world today, because although it has had its failures, it’s had its successes as well and the UN has done much and evolved since it was started. The UN in general is a lot larger than the original League of Nations with a lot more sections and laws pertaining to it; it covers a vast area of problems, not just peace keeping, but economical as well. Instead of criticizing the UN I say we should work to make it better.

interesting!
i agree with payab, the poll gives a foolish and un-realistic idea.

can u tell me, where can washington post or bbc go for survey? to south? to east? no, never. they conducted the survey either in thier office or in kabul. if so, i agree with it. otherwise, 90 % people are aginst the US occupation. 10% in favour. this does not necesarily means that the 90% favours taliban. but they do oppose US and allies.
karzai's govt. has strong presence where they live! yes, they live in kabul.
