we will run out
March 27, 2003 - 06:43 AM

Someday in the near future we are going to have to face the problem of running out of natural resourses, such as oil, copper, gold and other minerals. It is not as if each time we take these mineral the Earth will replace them. Most of these goods and minerals are wasted because of our greetiness. Instead of walking to a place thats like about 4 blocks the street, people drive. Well Hellow we are going to run out of oil soon. This is an issue that might change the future. Of how people are going to live, communicate, and their transportation. Why isn't it being taken care of now???? Because the people in power of any country write now are going to be to old to even drive by the time this happens. Well for people like myself this is an insult.
The cost of the resourses going up still doesn't stop from people wasting them. Those who do get around in cars should fell fortunate because not everyone will have this experience and if nothing is done then, people in the future won't get to either.
The minerals that we take from the Earth everyday like lead, or copper isn't going to keep on reproducing either. Why is it that we don't look at these things before hand. By the time people are going to start thinking about this it might be too late.
Of corse their nothing else we can do but use the minerals up because we are fortunate that our planet Earth have provided us with them. But we should also make arrangements for the future. For ourselves, and for some of you for your children.

Simon vs Ehrlich...
March 27, 2003 - 12:11 PM
|
|
Julian Simon (an economist) made a bet with Paul Ehrlich (famous author who claimed population would outstrip resources). Simon said that Ehrlich could make a list of raw materials he thought would go up in price in ten years. All of the materials Ehrlich chose DROPPED in price and he has been complaining about that bet ever since.
The prices dropped because society will often change technologies and ways of doing things. We substitute more plastic for wood or iron. We use more natural gas instead of oil. Already we recycle steel, paper, aluminum, and some plastics. As prices change, we will substitute more recycling or alternate methods to accomplish the same task.
We will get into trouble when our ingenuity becomes limited as opposed to physical resources.

I agrre with Elvi3000. Water is a renuable source because it evaporates to just come back in the form of precipitaion.

Our natural resources will obviously run out. For example Water, i know it is reusable but if some much people in the world waste the quantity of the water will go no where but down

u people don't know what your takin about... we will run out. their is water pollusion.....and not all water is renewable. for ex. Canada has 20 percent of the worlds fresh water and only 9 percent of it is renewable. thats only an example but if we keep using up our natural resourses we will run out of them eventualy.

Club of Rome
April 9, 2003 - 08:48 AM
|
|
Back in the '70s, a group called the Club of Rome put out a fancy report saying that we were going to run out of everything in the next few years and energy prices would skyrocket. What happened instead was the internet came along and provided jobs and growth with much less pollution than the industries at that time.
Certainly, we should not destroy our atmosphere or water supplies. However, I am a little skeptical when I hear of imminent shortages of raw materials. Increased efficiency, conservation, and substitution of sources makes a real impact.
