Palestinian Civil War
December 16, 2006 - 04:39 PM

sigh,
this is really getting tragic -
obviously talks of a Unity government have failed because Hamas doesn't want to moderate and recognise Israel -
throughout it all there has been tit - for - tat violence between the factions.
its been going both ways - the first big action was taken by Hamas who tried to assasinate the Fatah security cheif only 2 weeks after winning the elections.
more recently they killed 3 children of a top Fatah Intelligence cheif -
Fatah escalated by trying to assasinate the Hamas Prime Minister and shoting his son in the process.
now that Abbas has called new, early elections - Hamas is calling it an act of war -
this is so damaging to the Palestinian cause it is really sad.
Israel pulled out of Gaza - and ever since the Palestinians have done nothing but fight eachother.
I think frankly the educational system Hamas and Arafat respectively set up is a big part of the problem - if you glorify myrterdom and violence as means of political expression - it is just a matter of time before it comes back to bite you in the ass.
I predicted this - I told "Palestinian" on these boards that when Israel pulled out the Palestinians would fight eachother.
sigh...
anyway Al Jazeera article below.

"Violent clashes erupt in Gaza
Protests turned violent after Abbas called
for early elections.
At least 18 Palestinians have been wounded in the Gaza Strip after supporters of the ruling Hamas and Fatah traded fire during protests after Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, called for early elections, medics and witnesses say.
A Palestinian boy was killed when he was caught in a gunfight in Gaza City, medical sources said.
The boy, Ibrahim Musleh, 13, died of bullet wounds shortly after being taken to hospital.
Thousands of armed Hamas and Fatah supporters staged competing protests in central Gaza City late on Saturday.
Hamas has rejected Abbas's call for elections, warning that it amounted to a call for "civil war" and vowed to fight the measure by bringing its supporters into the streets.
"Oh, Abu Mazen, oh spy!" chanted Hamas supporters, some of them masked and carrying the green flags of the movement and portraits of prime minister Ismail Haniya, in Gaza City.
"No, a hundred times not to early elections!" "Abu Mazen's call is a provocation and a coup d'etat against legitimacy and democracy," a Hamas spokesman, Ismail Radwan, cried to the crowd, referring to Abbas by his widely used monicker.
"The government is not responsible for the boycott" of the international community."
Al Jazeera reports that the interior ministry had issued an arrest warrant against a local commander of al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a resistance group loyal to Fatah.
Abbas said he decided to call for early presidential and parliamentary elections to resolve an unprecedented political crisis with ruling Hamas.
"I decided to call for early presidential and legislative elections," Abbas said to applause during an eagerly awaited speech in Ramallah on Saturday.
"Basic law stipulates that the people are the source of power. "Let the people have their say and decide. "I will talk as quickly as possible with the central elections commission to launch the preparations for the ballot."
He said: "Despite the suffering, the pain, the confrontations whoever is responsible for them, we will not allow ourselves to sink into a civil war.
"Palestinian blood will rest a border that will not be crossed."
Reviving the PLO Abbas expressed determination to keep the Palestinian Liberation Organisation as the only legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
"Those who talk about the illegitimacy of the PLO's executive committee are operating under its umbrella abroad."
The governing Hamas movement immediately rejected Abbas's announcement.

Throwing sand in the eyes in an attempt to blame Hamas for whatever reason is a very cheap one in my opinion.
Everyone knows that Hamas was attacked locally and iinternationally since the first day they won the democratic elections in Palestine. The corrupt officials of Fatah who were very shocked by the stunning victory of Hamas were among the first onces to launch this campaign we are witnessting today. They simply don't want Hamas to succeed in anything.
It is well-known among the Palestinians that Fatah officials such as Mohammad Dahalan who is favourite #1 for the Israelis is the direct leader of the death squads which is responsible for many deaths during the last few months.
Further, Hamas's history testifies for it and not against it. Hamas did not send its men to smash government buildings or kidnap foreign workers when it was in the opposition as Fatah is doing right now.
Perhaps the first poster of this thread should try and investigate about who assassinated Musa Arafat when there was no Hamas in the government in the first place, and who attempted to help the Israelis assassinate Arafat himself before accusing Hamas of being the cause of these troubles.

Well, it is tragic.
The idea of unity government just doesn't work now, and I doubt it will.
I think Hamas is probably the main problem for the conflict. It really needs to compromise--for God's sake--and let it be finally peace.
The Palestinians want peace, so do the Israelis. After Israel pulled out of Gaza last year, it was so obvious that they wanted peace--by compromising. And the silly thing was that the Palestinians regarded it as a 'victory' and not as a way to settle the conflict by making compromises.
Anyway, Abbas' early election will just make everything worse instead of solving the problem. Get prepared for another civil war.
hhh
Why can't just Hamas recognize Israel and they will get their money, their lives, their peace.--our peace.
I just don't get it. It's so insanely devastating.

It seems Americans play Fatah against Hamas providing the former with weapons and expensive training camps. Americans even think of enlarging the Force 17 from 3500 to 6000...
This is really interesting given the fact that many Force 17 members serve at the al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades..and some of them such as Abu Yousuf openly confess being part of the Brigades and ultimately using advanced technology provided now to Fatah against Israelis..
The history repeats itself. Americans really have hard time realising what they do...Instead of blocking weapons smuggling via Egyptian borders to Hamas and ceasing to provide weapons to Fatah (Brigades is on a terrorist group list of Americans) they just fuel the whole thing. Oh, I almost forgot to say Israeli helped delivering those weapons to Force 17...
Basically, what US does is not only to condone the civil war in the Palestinian territories per se, but also to provide weapons necessary for waging it.
I think if we were to put instead of all those Israeli, Palestinian and US politicians some political science students from just any university, these latler would have resolved the issue long time ago..

Trust me, elemental
The US will arm Fatah and the presidential guard of Abbas with all weapons and even try to ignite a civil war if necessary just to make a point that Hamas has failed.
