BOOKS THAT REALLY MOVE YOU

I recently read a book by Robert A. Anderson, which is really making a difference to the way I now think about life, and view the whole world situation. The book is entitled "Church of God? or the Temples of Satan." If anyone has read it, perhaps we can discuss the issues it raises.

I used to agree with death penalty but then when I read, "A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest Gaines, I totally shifted. I realized that it will not stop violence but it also penalize people who are innocent.
On the lighter side, I find "The Essential Rumi" translated by Coleman as very inspiring, witty and realistic. I just love it.

I was given 'The God Delusion' by Richard Dawkins for Christmas. As someone who was brought up a Christian but always had a very 'sciency' brain it was really interesting to hear this kind of argument and I found myself agreeing with almost every word.
Whilst being a bit uncertain about the whole religion is immoral thing I can totally agree about a God and religion being superfluous.

Colom,
You said: "As someone who was brought up a Christian but always had a very 'sciency' brain it was really interesting to hear this kind of argument and I found myself agreeing with almost every word."
Are you sure you mean a 'sciency' (i.e. scientific) brain (mind), OR, possibly, a MATERIALISTIC mind?

No, I mean a scientific mind * I have no problem with thinking about more than the material world, but using this scientific approach (and a bit of philosophy) I found myself becoming an atheist.
So andy, what is the book that moves you?
edited because I realised I mean what book moves you, apart from the ones you've already mentioned.p

I recently read the Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. It was a very powerful story and it was scary how Plath can make you believe that the psychosis her character is succumbing to is completely normal. You can identify with the main character and be immersed into a world of mental instability even if you yourself are completely stable; that really moved me. I reccommend The Bell Jar to anyone who wants to read the work of a literary genius.

Richard Dawkin's "The God Delusion"- I dare anyone who believes in a god to read this book.

I just finished Oryx and Crake by M. Atwood, it was not moving but quite creepy...kind of a premonition and what the future holds for us if we continue to pollute and if we take genetics as a religion.. I highly recommend it.

"Tuesdays With Morrie" by Mitch Albom. Everyone will come away from reading this book with a new outlook on life, or at least having learned a few important life lessons.
