Violence in Darfur on a new high!
December 15, 2006 - 12:09 PM

[link="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6183469.stm"]

Nearly half a million people in the Darfur region of Sudan have less access to aid as a result of a recent upsurge in violence, according to aid agencies.
A statement by six agencies operating in Darfur say 250 humanitarian workers have been withdrawn, following a sharp rise in attacks in the past 10 days.

They renewed an appeal for all sides to observe a ceasefire allowing a full resumption of aid activities.

Some 200,000 people are estimated to have died in Darfur since 2003.

More than two million have been driven from their homes.

Friday's statement was signed by Oxfam, the International Rescue Committee, Goal, Concern, World Vision and the Norwegian Refugee Council.

They say military activity, banditry and violence against humanitarian workers have increased across Darfur since early December.

Q&A: Peacekeeping in Darfur

The latest upsurge has led to the temporary withdrawal of staff serving a total of 488,000 people, according to the agencies.

"If the deterioration is allowed to continue, the impact on civilians could be devastating," says Paul Smith-Lomas, Regional Director for Oxfam.

"With new displacements and attacks, the presence of aid agencies is more important than ever. Yet every day brings one huge blow after another to aid efforts," he adds.

Peacekeepers

Blame cannot be attributed to just one group, says the statement, which calls for an immediate ceasefire.

The BBC's Jonah Fisher in Khartoum says the call is likely to fall on deaf ears as the Sudanese government and its partners in the Janjaweed militia appear to be stepping up their activities.

From being elusive figures patrolling Darfur's barren landscape, the militia are now present in the centre of many key towns, our correspondent says.

The violence has intensified despite the presence of some 7,000 African Union peacekeepers.

Sudan rejects plans for the United Nations to take control and increase the number of peacekeepers to 20,000.

The conflict began in early 2003, when a rebellion by local groups triggered a counter-offensive by the army and government-backed Arab militias.

Western pressure fails to move Sudan

What can be done to contain this crisis ?
Is total UN control the right way out of this crisis?
or should UN give more space to the Sudanese govt to tackle the issue?

I think the Sudanese government IS the issue, and since they have been keeping the UN out they have had plenty of space -

they are collaborating with the Jaweed militia responsible for many of the crimes.

The UN needs to go in and go in strong - the leaders of this militia need to be arrested and the dynamic of this catastrophe must be changed

hmmm I agree with the need for urgent UN intervention .
IF not a direct intervention then at least they should support the AU in containing the crisis

But direct UN intervention seems quite difficult .
France seems ready to veto any such decisions since it has interests ( oil) to safeguard in Sudan.

China also has similar interests !

so two of the permanent members in the SC against any such action !

and here we have the fundamental problem with the security council - if any action taken without the council approval is against International Law -

then how can anyone stop this Genocide? Interests of big powers will always create such a problem?

I agree, powerful states have made the Security Council a tool for pursuing their own goals.

Exactly. What's wrong with UN intervention when their people are just dying??
The government is basically the one that makes this happened--and they keep doing it. They're backing up the Janjaweed militia, preventing the UN peacekeepers from protecting the weaks--letting their people die, one by one. 400.000 people already died, 2.5 million displaced, and that doesn't seem enough for them to take a real action.

The Security Council Resolution 1706 issued last september could have been a solution if that government haven't had opposed it. And since they already did, they should have another alternative--like they said.
And we need it right now.

I am sorry, i don't know much about this topic, but i'm very interested. What are the interests of France and China in Darfur? Do they have petroleum companies there? And how can promoting the conflict or at least not doing anything to stop it can help to french or chinese interests? What is the background of this conflict?confused

Thank God! I really hope that these UN forces will help the region and eventually create some sort of peace.

ACT: In December , 2006 the African Union forces, which have been offering some protection to Darfur over the past year, will be forced by government of Sudan to pull out.

FACT: If the U.N. and N.A.T.O. do not immediately provide peacekeeping forces, by January, 2007 over 500,000 Darfuris will be killed. Over 400,000 have been murdered in the past 3 years.

FACT: No Government, including the U.N., has EVER acted to stop a genocide until its citizens made them. This means that we all have to:

MAKE SOME NOISE!

For as long as it takes...

URGENT...

Please do as much of the following as many times a day as possible in the next few months....

our actions can make the difference between life and death for millions of Darfuris.

E-mail President Bush and ask him to lead the effort to create a NATO force for Darfur NOW at http://oneamericacommittee.com/action/sign-petitions/email/darfur_act

TEXT Message President Bush to help Darfur by dialing 56658 and texting in 'Darfur'. Do this as many times a day in the next 2 weeks
as you can.
CALL the WHITE HOUSE: 202-456-1111: You will be talking to the "comment" operators.....please ask them to tell President Bush to send N.A.T.O. forces to Darfur immediately. Be polite.
