[Poll] Should School Be Later??
March 26, 2003 - 08:52 AM

Who thinks that school is too early? Not because of it's bordom of subjects, but because of our struggling to wake up, the hardship of moving, waking up confused looking at your watch? Are you like me? Can't sleep at night and waking up at 8AM? Give me YOUR opinions of the re-scheduling of school!!

I think school should start a little later, at least about 10:00, if students are more awake, then they are for sure to do better, have better marks, and be more efficient. If students are tired and weary, they cannot concentrate, and all they think of is being in the bed.

That is not the point of education, schools are to teach people, and if people want to take advantage of the re-scheduling of school and sleep later than they are now, well then you do that, most students like I, WILL sleep at the same time, and be more awake than usual.

All the time I wake up later than all, 8:30, brush my teeth, change, drink milk, have a small snack, get ready and head to school at 8:40. It is difficult to do all that within 10 minutes, and I would like to have as much sleep as I can, yes, I know I can wake up earlier, but that does not help, because then I would just sit there and wait until 8:30 anyways.

So if you're like me, you'd probably would like school later just like me, yes sometimes school can be painful and boring, but perhaps it would be better if more people are awake, therefore resulting in a better mood, better mood to learn, concentrate more, and listen to the teachers instead of dropping your head on your arms falling asleep.

Marks will be better, moods will be better, and teachers and kids will be happier. If students can do better, like me, they WILL do better, unless they just say, "Hell with school.", well then they do that, I would probably take an advantage of an extra hour of sleep and at least try to do better.

I think that the time that school starts is fine, because the later the school starts the later it will end. In the morning the most you can do is sleep through the extra hour, but if you have this extra time after school, it is different. You may get that time to study, or to play outside with your friends. Or even take extra lessons. If school did start at a later hour you might not have enough time to finish your homework because it ends at a later time. In some cases sleeping in could cause you to be more lazy.

Exactly my point, before when I was sleeping at 10 o'clock, I didn't get any C's on my second and third term, and this second term, I jhave got the nastiest, mark I have, EVER, seen!

We need our extra hour of sleep, even though if we DO cut off an hour of school, we would be learning the same amount or possibly more cause then we WILL be paying attention. I've been doing some kind of chinese method my mom taught be about rubbing the eyes with your index finger, too long to explain, and rubbing an area of the eye. It actually helps, I've been getting 78%+.

So we need our extra hour of sleep, these days I haven't been totally awake even with that method, I am still usually quite tired.

School starting at regular time
March 27, 2003 - 10:52 AM

I strongly believe that school should start at its regular time at 8:45. In the morning when the sun rises, and that it is the time we awake, it is much of an advantage that we would get more sunlight. In addition, in the future, when we find our career and interests, most of our occupations would be starting at an early time. To prepare us for our futures, we should indeed start school at this regular time.

Eventually, if school starts at its regular time now, the majority of kids would enjoy and prefer going outside and join in recreational activites for entertainment after school. If school starts any later, students might not have the opportunity to participate in any of the activities since they would be in school learning. Another reason is that if school starts later, there may not be as much sunlight for people to enjoy their activities.

Therefore, I agree that school starting at its regular time is absolutely fine.

This will make me feel old
March 27, 2003 - 12:18 PM

There is actually real scientific evidence to suggest that adolescents are biologically attuned to a delayed circadian rhythm.

Or in English,

Scientists think that teenagers will be better students if school starts later in the day. We have a daily cycle of concentration and energy levels (to do with metabolism), and for teenagers, it is set about two hours behind the adult population. So, where on average, an adult might be functioning effectively at 8am, an average teenager works effectively at about 10am. Hence wanting to go to bed later as well.

Found it...

from http://www.drgreene.com/21_555.html

"For many years it was felt that the sleepiness of adolescents was their own fault. Their busy social agenda and burgeoning independence led to too many late nights. Recently, however, a different picture has emerged. Independent investigators in Brazil, Japan, and the United States (Andrade, et al; Ishihara, et al; and Carskadon, et al.) have suggested that the internal, biologic sleep-timing mechanism is reset along with the other changes of puberty. Their bodies signal them to go to sleep at a later hour and also to sleep later in the morning. They are often incapable of falling asleep earlier. Their school schedules, however, continue to force them out of bed at an early hour. This leads to a population of chronically sleep deprived adolescents."

There's plenty of other information out there if people would like to bombard their teachers with it; have a look on google, and then follow up the academic papers on the matter.

That is a pretty good point Fionalau, but " in the future, when we find our career and interests", we will need more knowledge, more skill, and of course energy. If we sleep all day long with our heads down while teachers talking? How are we supposed to have education while we think of sleeping?

School shouldn't start later than it is right now because like sukhpreet said, the later it starts, the later it ends. Also, having school end later means you would have less time for everything else: homework, TV, chatting with your friends, relax, dinner, etc., therefore school shouldn't start later than it is right now.

Did you ever think that if school starts an hour later then it will end an hour later? This leaves us with a lot less time to go out and play or to finish our homework...
