cabernet

i just got home from a nice dinner with a friend. on my way to the restaurant on the F train, i happened to sit close to a homeless man who smelled rather foul. other passengers moved to the opposite end of the car, but i was abosorbed in my book and just sat to read. it then occurred to me that i had experienced worse smells; i remember the rancid earthen gutters in the korean neighborhood where i grew up, pig blood drying under a mass of green flies; a restroom in calais, maine that made my eyes tear; slaughterhouses of west side chicago. i also remembered the hard times ive had -- to apply for food stamps .. or not?

tonight i had duck confit (a fist of meat covered in fat, really) and many appetizers -- a shrivelled shrimp, bursting with cayenne; a lucious cream soup, and lobster toast; we ended up spliting 2 bottles of wine .. a fine, fine merlot, and a nice burgandy. apple caramel medallions for dessert. my share of the bill was $122 ($35 for my share of the tip .. i like to tip well).

thinking back on this contrast .. homeless man --- dinner for a prince .. i cant help but to wonder we ... i ... have a life style others would envy. ive had difficult times, but not like the calcutta boy who fights for consciousness for lack of food, prisoners who rot in jails for a principle, a young girl who totes a carbine in costa rica. we need a global perspective. we have to do more from here. wars are waged with more than bullets. a un sanctioned trade block, causing slow death, is sometimes worse than tanks rolling into your town. surely, the us -- and others -- have been guilty of arrogant disregard for the wellbeing of the poor the world over. the wtc attack needs to to be avenged... but how? do we admit to our nation's shortcomings? do we dare? ... in the mean time, pour me another glass of cabernet.
