What can the youth influence the government to do?

This question is similar to the one found under the millenium development title. What can the youth influence the government to do? The youth (17 and under) are often given no power to make any decisions. Many people argue that they don't know enough or that they haven't seen the world yet and therefore can not make a correct decision. However when something that may impact their lives is presented in the government shouldn't children have the right to some say? I know many 'children' that are brilliant, they understand the world and can make correct decisions for the world, isnt preventing their voice from being heard in the government a form of discrimination by age? Should we get the right to voice our opinion?

There should be a Government Portal or Communications Department that is made available to the youth...here in SA there is a Youth Commission that reports to the Presidential and this enables the voices of the ordinary citizen-youth to be carried accross. The challenge is that how many youth are aware of the existence of such platforms?? This is where Government should be responsible in creating the awareness and encouraging youth participation....I know many young people with huge potential who felt demotivated & silenced due to absence of a young Government network...but since the Youth Commission was launched -this has improved.

There two scenarious where youth can influence the government. First is the youth been given or taking platform to influence government. Secondly is where youth is been used to infuence government.
Hopefully there is no one who can support the second one of youth been used. The first one where youth are given platform is where there is democracy, either by government communicating with youth or opposite. If youth where to influence government violently, the case of South African youth during apartheid era(1976[b]) is classical.

The real challenge is to first and foremost create the awareness that the youth are a force to reckorn with, because as things stand now, majority of the youth are not even aware that they ought to push for issues partaining them in government circles. They are resigned to faith because most of them have been made to believe that they have nothing to contribute.
Once the number of youth that lend a voice to their issue in government increases, it will not then be difficult to look for a platform where collectively they can push their case, wether it exists or they need to push for it to be created.
Until the number of youth pushing for decisions for the youth grow, and until such number of youth form a coalition and make their voices heard, all we can ever hope for are these kinds of ramblings in discussion boards and chat rooms that will do everything but change the status quo.

unfrequent engagement of youths regards to this issue has made it seems that the youths are left behind. Like already sugested, youths must be exposed to enble them express their feels for our government to see expressly youths needs and contributions in our society.

What about for those youth who aren't represented in the government. How should we allow the government to hear and value our opinion? What should we as youth do to become valuable members of our society?
