[Poll] Development?

The word "development" seems to be very popular, especially since the last decade (when we came up with "sustainable development" and the MDGs). It always adds a positive connotation to names of projects, organizations, institutes, etc. The term has been overused and the result is that no one is quite sure what it means and can therefore use it to mean anything. What do you think "development" means? What should development be? Should we even continue using the term? What about the terms "developing country" and "developed country"? Aren't these terms vague, even inaccurate (because they seem to imply that developed countries have achieved a sort of "perfect"/end state whereas the developing countries have not) and possibly derogatory? What do you think, people who live in countries that are labeled as "developing"?

Hi Sarah..
I think "Development" is a Continuum is a process and not an end. calling a nation Developed is basically a myth. we all who belongs to different nation and regions of world are developed in some way. some are financially more sound and other may be culturally rich. I agree to what you have said " the termsdeveloping country and developed country these terms vague, even inaccurate "
calling some countries as undeveloped or developing is sterio-typical labelling.

I was pleased with all your contributions in this issue, if any country is already developed, then should go to bed and sleep then transfer all his leftover to the developing countries for them to develop as well, but we always see even the developed countries eyeing into the undevelop countries.

We are all (People, Countries) developing, or at least crying and trying to. Some advance real quickly others lag others stalled/stuck.
We will do so until we go extinct.
In effect, doctrines of the past and the now, stops us from evolving which the next grand step.
Development is like the smallest drop of water that i could see while wearing my 3.5s, while evolution is like the combined volumes of this planets ocean water.
I use a variation of the word as one of my e-mail code names (alias), DevelopHer@hotmail.com
Development is incrementaly stuck because of the war of our evolved languages/ways.
