[Poll] Has technology become something people need?

If you have ever read a short story called the Veldt. It is about how a family relies on technology so much it causes their destruction. Although this might be a bit extreme it is not far from the truth.
Do you think technology has become a need for people?
Do people need technology?

well humans have come to this stage in such a way that technology has become a need in almost every aspect of our lives.
But I feel that this dependence is less a problem than the irresponsible use or overuse of technology.
There are ways to spread awareness about this issue.

Technology was always indispensable to humans..
Every age had its technological achievements which were considered vital for those who lived in that age.
Now is the same. Only the scale of technological achievements and its spread became too paramount a feature not to influence our lifes like never before.

I think technology is a need when it's there. I mean, business used to create wants but now it creates needs. However, if we look into primitive cultures or places where technology is not available, it is also not a need. People depend on the environment they live in. If you live in the mountains, you depend on nature. If you live in the city, then you depend on what the city offers to you like technology.
I read the VELDT. At first, I thought it was just about technology. But then, when I read it closely, I found it to be discriminating. I mean, it says about the dependence on technology but it also tells about Africa and the stereotype of this continent. The story depicts savagery which directly connects to Africa. Why should the parents in the Veldt die in the "veldt" or African land being eaten by lions and not in a more sophisticated manner, say gun machines?

Technology has become a crucial driving force in the development and progress of our lifes in so many ways. We would could not have reached the point we are at now without technology. Its contribution to advancements in all fields in the last fifty years is unparalled. It really has become an essential part of the developed world.
The problem technology has created, or rather we the users have created, lies in its dispersion across the world. Developing nations with poor infrastructure desperatley need some of the technologies, that we in the developed world take for granted.
So not only has technology become essential in the developed world, but it is becoming increasingly essential in the developing world. We must work hard to close the technology-divide.

Bradbury is one of my favorite authors, and I got really creeped out by The Veldt, especially because it was written long before violent video games, much less Columbine.
We do need technology; computers are an integral part of the economy, we need modern medicine, and most people in Western countries have no idea how to grow their own food anyway.
However, we do not need all of technology. If all the violent video games went up in a puff of smoke, it would be a good thing. I think we could live without laser-guided bombs and nuclear reactors. Also, it is possible to own too many inconvenient conveniences. They say that hard work cures heart disease and depression, and technology has spent a little too much time trying to cure hard work. Robotic vacuum cleaners, segues and those electronic exercise things that literally move your muscles for you with a jolt of electricity are all just silly. How badly do you want to spend the whole day sitting down? Its not healthy!
Great topic, by the way.

Humans have become very dependent on technology. Partially cause we are letting technology control our lives. When the millennium came... we were all worried about the Y2K bug. But the millennium came and left, and we didn’t have any problems. In school, we are all required to have typed, 12 inch size, times new roman font papers. Instead of walking to the grocery store, we have started to rely on cars. There are more supermarkets and less general /corner stores. More people spend time indoors playing videogames and watching TV then skateboarding or riding bikes. In the last few years, the cell phone industry has absolutely skyrocketed. Now u can check your e-mail, chat, get calls, watch the game, and much more from a phone not even 4 inches long. They are more slik, stylish, sexier models coming out attracting the youth especially. The time of typewriters has come and gone. Now we have portable computers, laptops, and much much more. Our technology has expanded soo much that it is hard to stop it. It has started to control our lives and the way we live. There once used to be a world without technology, however the more children grow everyday, the more we rely upon these machines. It is up to us to make the difference. Not all technology is bad. Hospitals wouldn’t function very well without the use of technology. However we need to place a limit on the use of these electronic devices. We need to take control of our own lives and make the difference.

To an extent yes, but it all depends on the people and the location of the people. Take for instance, some of the indigenous people in Africa do adapt to traditional ways, and thats with the outside world technology. In the US it is needed because, thats how a lot of people communicate, through E-mail and instant message. Two examples of how and when techonology is being used.

Although all of us have discussed the fact that technology, in regards to communication and gadgets and gizmos, are not exactly necessary to people.
What about medhcine? Without technology or advances in technology how would people create or improve in the quality of medical care.
Perhaps the solution we are looking for is balance. Between humans and technology. To not end up like the Veldt but also to not give up technology.
Now I ask whoses responsibility is it to create this balance?

Yes off course my friends…!
Technology is one most important thing people in most part of the world today need to change their world around. Technology affords tremendous opportunities in bridging the overall gap that exists between poor nations, developing and developed countries.
The most striking contrasts in the modern world are the enormous differences in technological development and human well-being-differences most evident in Africa.
As an African, I believe that Africa's technological gap could be the source of its increasing economic decline. As one studying would notice, most developing regions are constantly upgrading their own technological capabilities and the global marketplace has become increasingly liberalized and competitive. Technologies are seen by many as being capable of improving the economies in nations through increased productivity.
For me, Technology could generate substantial productivity advances which would allow a significant growth of industrial output. Such output expansion, if large enough, could substantially influence the creation of employment and the creation of wealth also.
Technologies and ICT as it had been seen in developing nations would enable new ways of doing business, quick opportunity for employments and new ways of working, and would also lead to the emergence of new forms of organization, new services, products and markets, new opportunities and new way of tackling basic challenges that exist in poor and/or developing countries….
This is why I supposedly support the answer YES we need technology now and for always, I welcome all new ideas in the advancement of technology in every aspect of life.

mnopq seems to be the person who has really got it.
Humans always have, and always will rely on technology.
Think of how we measure our human history;
The Stone Age
The Iron Age
The Bronze Age
a more recent example would be the Industrial Revolution.
From our earliest history we were defined by our technology, the stone age is due to us using stone tools, the iron age was our introduction to metal work, the bronze age was our advance into using alloys.
Humans never lived without technology, and in most cases couldn't survive without it. A stone age warrior without a flint knife would have found it hard to hunt for food for his family.
Later on when human populations increased we were no longer able to survive on scavenging food alone, we had to invent agriculture to grow crops and keep animals.
Technology not only makes our lives easier, it makes our lives possible.

Presence is what dictates the relative need of technology. Without access, people are able to make do without it. The real question is, do those without access to technology and its benefits find themselves in a disadvantaged position? I think we know the answer to that one. How best to rectify is the other real question.

yeah, technology as become a part of every individual.but we has humans should not make ourselves dependent on it.we should still be able to do without it even if it is not available.but,we shouldnt push it too far.if you have watched the movie i,robot, i believe that movie is a prediction of what the future would look like with increasing dependent on technology.
