Cultural dominancy [where idividual identity remain]
November 30, 2006 - 06:54 AM

I suppose in this era of globel change, where world changed himself in a litle village, where on one click we can see a world which was not possible few decates ago, where different cultures and identities are raced with each other, which culture sustain????
In this race where there are lot of tv channels, net groups, radio, and other moods of modern communication have been used as weapons for the most part of dominancy, where all groups are just for capture market working in a fast way to use every bad method which may be treated beyond the morality and over the cultural values what will remain for independant identity?
I am not opposit of such global advancement but where is the origional culture?

Is the culture of europe not dominate on asia?
Is american culture not leaded by african peoples?
where the pure identity of the old culture vanished?
Is it enough we see all this only in our culture parties and mela?
Is this only for those people who are living in rural sides?
So, lets think about it!!
We can save the purity of our own culture.
It is not problem, whom nation we are related but it is for all of us to save our own identity.
SAVE YOURSELVES
SAVE YOUR CULTURE.

Culture is not something fixed and immutable.

It changes, it evolves, it incorporates ("useful" )new elements, it purges itself of its ("useless" )old elements; in brief, culture is in a perpetual evolution.

It happens so that many of current trends are put forth by the more developed parts of the Western world. This, in itself, is cause by the far advancement of social, political and economic aspects of the countries in question, which then indirectly have their cultures, traditions, and habits "exported" to places where people "aspire" to have the same level of life, etc.

Even in countries as traditional and as radically different as Japan, the American culture makes itself to be sensed especially among younger generations.

It is not to condone the fact that many traditional cultures entirely give in to the Western traditions. That is, in my opinion wrong. What have happened during the history and might ideal happen now is to have some kind of blending of so called "modern aka Western" values into the value system of other countries, which then will preserve the original ones adding to it some "modern" flavours, a blend that to me would seem rather more attractive than either of both!

Culture is dynamics. It doesn't mean that we have to leave all the fundamentals. But, it should be changed with the time. We can see the historical background of our culture, which has been changed with the time.

Regarding the influence of other culture, that depends on the individual, how s/he perceives. I have seen many south asian people living in Europe, with following their culture but also some people living in their home country with the western culture. So, it doesn't mean that if you are in rural area then you are following the old one.

Education, exposure change the people's thinking power and they can decide what is good and what is not. We need to change for our personnel as well as social development.

Women's saris restricted their mobility, and killed many woman than man in Bangladesh Cyclone. Do you think you have to follow this Sari culture. So don't worry about the culture, just think about the human welfare and the problem what we are facing i.e. global warming, poverty, and so on. We can't back in the stone age.....

It's true that culture is always changing and adapting to society. But cultural change isn't always neutral or benevolent in nature.

What yaseenveesar is describing has an academic name. It's called cultural imperialism.

Another thing to note is that one can find or create subcultures within dominant cultures - subcultures trying to carve out a space that has different values. Turning to older traditions is one way to carve out a space but as noted, it is difficult to maintain the relevancy of older ways of life to modern times. Trying to create art and culture that expresses different values is another way. Some subcultures build themselves specifically on the principle of criticizing the dominant culture. Others go in entirely different directions.
