Muslim and Violence
November 27, 2006 - 07:02 AM

Down here in the Southern part of Nigeria, nearly every adolescent associates an Hausa man from the North with a dagger. Scary and untrue as that may sound, it takes only accosting a dozen kids to confirm this. It seems there is a lurking association between a Northerner and conflict. As the North is associated with Hausas (not mentioning Fulanis and the other tribes) it is also synonymous for the average South-Easterner with Muslim/Islam. The question now is whether this is true or not and why either way; then what is the origin of it all?

Incidentally, there is this innocent look that hangs over the face of these Northerners that seem to becloud anything like an invovlvement with violence. Well, may be this is because I saw these people in places away from their home. All the same, the big question is, Why the association between Hausa/Islam in Nigeria with violence?

I think it is time this got clarified and there be an orientation towards and erdication of this impression.

You have just raised an important issue here, which need to be look into and confirm if the situation is traditional or otherwise.
Maybe is of personal self defence or Do we say hausas way of life?.

Who knows my friend.

How I wish people would comment on this so we can trash things out and know when we are victimizing people or not. I believe it'd go a long way into changing our perception for good.

I dont agree with you that Islam is associated with violence. I grew up with Muslims though I am a chritian.
Every group of people have certaiin negative tendencies. The Hausa's just like anyother tribe in Nigeria has it's fair share of violence. No part of Nigeria can be mentioned as not been involved in one form of violence or another.
It's a pity that some fanatics in the north hide under the influence of religion to settle political scores with their southern counterparts.
Similarly, some of these people are blinded by illiteracy and hooliganism.
In addition some enlightened people incite idle young persons to score cheap points.
Violence in every form should be discouraged.
What has been happening in Kano, Bauchi, Jos and other restive places in the name of religion is highly regretable.

What is the association of Islam and violence?

What is the association of Christianity and Nazi Germany's rampage over Europe? What is the association of Christianity and the US nuclear holocaust on Hiroshima? What is the association of Christianity and Rios Mott's slaughtering of 90,000 Salvadorans? Was Stalin a Muslim? Were Ehud Olmert,Ariel Sharon, or Menachem Begin, people who ordered the killing and dispossession of hundreds of thousands, Muslim?

There is none.

In fact, more Muslims have been slaughtered this century than anyone else. The constant repetition in mass media of the causal link of Islam and violence is a way of getting the feeble minded to launch an attack on Muslim countries. The feeble minded don't want to sort through nuances about local issues, politics, economics, and other causes of conflict. So make them blame the boogeyman of Islam.

That way, the real killers-the governments of Washington and London, for instance--can go and exacerbate through war and theft of Muslim resources the same poltical and economic conditions that are the real causes of so called "Muslim violence". Then they can blame Islam all over again.
