November 19, 2006 - 01:27 AM

It is really common we have seen daily on tv channels, newspapers, through people and by different sources of communication everyone talking about rights some of them so extremist and some of them talk reare but all talk about it. I really want to know one thing those who really cry that much for rights do they really work for rights? do they even know what rights are? some says protect human rights or persrve women rights and secure them or work for childern rights but do they really know what rights are?

Do people kow what human rights are? YEAH they do in my opinion and feel like fact. Rights are our freedoms to do something we were not previously allowed to do or allowed to say or allowed to act. Women have struggled with the right to vote and yet we have accomplished so much. We definitely know what rights are! We are still fighting for those equal rights because all have not been granted yet or the rights of children. This topic starter is going to be a very interesting one my friend!

It will be interesting to know everybody's views on this.

Rights have been defined in many of the UN covenants and Declarations.

Most of us would have theroretical knowledge about Rights. But how do these get practically ensured? This is something that many people are probably yet to reach a consensus on.

For example, there are organisations which work on the issue of child rights. But the Ban on child labour is something which has devided the organisations.

There are organisations which workon Disability Rights. Some of these would take people with disability to rallys and other forums to fight for the rights in a tokenistic manner, but some organisations do oppose this tokenistic participation.

Rights are traditions or laws that a government sets that are the birth rights of the citizens of that country. They are rights that protect freedoms and should be shared globally. (however this is not the case)

How about this simple explanation: human rights are the right to live free from fear. That about covers it. One should be able to live all aspects of one's life free from fear, free from fear of persecution and poverty. Poverty might include things like hunger and sickness, too. Every government seems to fall short of this definition, although some European countries come very close. Poverty has degrees. There is nothing wrong with being poor, as long as one has one's health and doesn't have expensive tastes. Persecution doesn't allow degrees, however. Persecution on the basis of sex, religion, political or sexual preference, race, language, etc., must always be condemned. This is really the cheapest right to give a country's people. Poverty alleviation is much more expensive. But some countries invest incredble sums in persecuting their own people. It's really sad.

In my opinion, the only right is to be free from unhappiness that isn't your fault. Women's rights and children's rights and the right to democracy and the possibility of economic improvement are all just different applications of the same basic law.

Imranlaghari: You started this forum. What do you think? Are our ideas of human rights close to yours? I very strongly feel human rights are absolute and should not be relativized, that is, every country should not be able to decide for itself what is a human right. That allows for too much abuse of human rights. During the Cold War, the USA and the West would often harp on freedom from persecution human rights, while the communist world would harp on "economic rights" (read freedom from poverty). Although Western intellectual apologists would often trumpet literacy and health care gains in communist countries, they were often very mum on political persecution in those countries. I don't think the communist countries did a very good job of securing freedom from poverty. Except for Cuba and N. Korea, they have all vanished for that reason.

The right to value and respect human life. This, I think, is basic.

*Well, rights as some one said, are privilages that people enjoy. As an activist,am interested in children issues because some people think children are to be see and not heard so they treat them any how.
Even the UN having adopted a document on childtren which is the"Convention on the Rights of the Child. And many governments have signed to work with this document, many children continue to sufferone way or the other due to the fact that, they do not understand why the views of children should not be respected.
Even some adults who claim to be fighting for the rights of children, have children who are maid servants in their homes.
So,I do not agree with you when you say those who fight for the rights of people dont' have any idea of what they are doing.I know what rights realy are and I know that is the same way others also do.
"UNTIL THE RIGHTS OF PEOPLE ESPECIALLY CHILDREN ARE RESPECTED,WE WILL CONTINUE TO FIGHT".
