[Poll] DEATH PENALTY
November 16, 2006 - 06:10 PM
|
|
is there anyone else out there who thinks thay should abolish the death penalty? I mean, it's so racist! Most of the people given the death penalty are black, and poor. You will NEVER find a rich person sitting on death row, because they can afford good lawyers, not crappy ones the state give them who barley give them a defence. It is in no way justice! Think of how many people have been killed and have been innocent! It's sick how politicians use these calculated, EXPENSIVE (2.2 million per person) deaths to further their agendas. Saying that by killling these criminals they are preventing others from commiting crimes. Texas has the highest death penalty rate, and the highest crime rate. in fact, after a highly publisized killing, there is usually a spike in crime. What are your opinions on this?*

Capital punishment statistics for the year 2003 in the United states is as follows;
Highlights include the following:
At yearend 2003, 37 States and the Federal prison system held 3,374 prisoners under sentence of death, 188 fewer than at yearend 2002.
Of those under sentence of death, 56% were white 42% were black, and 2% were of other races. Forty-seven women were under sentence of death in 2003, up from 38 in 1993.

[link="http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/abstract/cp03.htm"]
and for the data on the prisoners under death sentence in the year 2006
check the following site ;
[link="http://www.albany.edu/sourcebook/pdf/t6802006.pdf"]
you can also check the data on the number of prisoners( The US only) executed under civil authority by race and offense;
[link="http://www.albany.edu/sourcebook/pdf/t686.pdf"]
going through the above data it doesnt seem that the the number of whites under death sentence is higher then the blacks .
Also the number of those actually executed (according to the race) also seems to be almost the same .

yes, i do agree that in recent years the numbers have leveled out, however, does that make it anymore right? you will still find next ot no rich poeple on death row, and i just don't see how an eye for an eye would do anything but make the world blind. What ever happened to turn the other cheek? How about a life sentenve instead?

Mostly it bothers me because putting someone to death is saying you are absolutely certain they are guilty, and I am never absolutely certain of anything. What if you are wrong? What if the jury was threatened, the evidence faked, the judge racist? What if someone made a mistake in the crime lab and mislabled the DNA samples? It bothers me, because there is a chance that you would become a murderer instead of punishing one.

I personally believe that death Penalty should be banned except in the cases of child molestation, rape etc.
But of course I agree with William that there is always a chance of the jury being biased etc ...
but the cases listed above usually have strong medical and other evidences which leave no doubt.

I do not agree with death penalty. I used to but after a great thought on it, I realized it has no sense at all. It does not diminish crimes and besides it's an easy way out. I mean, a convicted criminal should have the time to reflect and realize the weight of his/her actions. S/he should suffer for what s/he did. Also, there are innocent people who are sentenced to death just because they don't have enough money to pay for a good lawyer.
We cannot commit the same mistakes like what happened to the "Witch Hunt" or the Malleus Malleficarum, or killing of Jews and so on.

being a lawyer i have seen some crimes for which i thought if i could just kill the person in the court room, people killing four people for only 300$, person who raped his daughter, etc.
again, if a person kills so many civilians, and u say, lets let his live because his death penalty is a wrong step, will impliedly incourage others to do the same again, and society will loose teh peace and satisfiaction. and is injustice with those so many innocent people who died with alot of wishes in thier hearts, leaving children and wife or family.
crimes against humanity, war crimes, are some instances in which i believe the person must not live anymore.

The death penalty is barbaric. NOBODY, in my humble decision, deserves to die, and NOBODY should have the right to choose whether someone else lives or not. The death penalty fails as a deterrant, and, in any cae, we do not live under a system of an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Abolish the eath penalty, it is a barbaric form of punishment.

Is there really any doubt that Saddam Hussein was guilty of murdering 100s of thousands of Iraqis? Without a doubt, many countries like Iran and Red China misuse the death penalty to intimidate religious and political minorities. But I still support the death penalty in countries where there is a fair legal system. In America and Japan there are sufficient court levels to which convicts can appeal their convictions. I find the death penalty an appropriate punishment for someone who has murdered another person (self-defense is an exception). I think we need to worry more about the victims of violent crime and their families. I don't think we do enough to relieve their grief. My blood boils when I read convicts in California are getting kidney transplants at taxpayer expense, while the families of their victims have no medical insurance. Call it "eye for an eye" if you will, I believe punishment must fit the crime.

yes, that is what we mean, no body has a right a take life of others, but when a person kills other, or if he is a dictator, an occopier and kills thousands he looses his immunity of life, coz he is no body to decide whether somebody should live or die. when he did wrong, he must face the consequences, otherwise what is the guilt of those who are killed by that person?

hmmm , in that case what is the guilt of a child who is victimised by a paedophile?
What is the guilt of a girl who is brutally raped ?
are those crimes in any way justified?
Personally I wouldnt want to see a paedophile living in the same neighbourhood or in the same city or anywhere else in the world!
It is not a crime which can be pardoned.
Its disgusting and inhumane.Period.
Sorry if I am sounding very strong on this point.
But it is an issue on which I can never change my opinion.

Who are we (meaning WE as in the human race) to take life and death in to our own hands? In my opinion the only way that death is just in this world, is when it is part of the cycle of life, in order for one species to survive another must die. Last i looked cannibalism was long gone from within our culture.
