the languages
March 19, 2003 - 02:34 AM

there are many languages we can all learn to speak depending on our interests.it becomes very dangerous when the only language we can speak can only be spoken by the use of force and through wars. we have lost touch with the languages that seem to be the best way to communicate with everyone.i believe that the best way to communicate with others is through friendly talks and a little bit of deplomacy. the world can never progress unless we learn to believe that we can never attain anything good unlesss we are ready to learn to speak the good language.

this is a very true thought.
force is an easy language --- real communication is much harder.

the language of understanding
March 19, 2003 - 09:05 AM

i absolutely agree. what we need is a language that shows the willingness of understanding to other people´s views. empathy is a very rare talent, so everybody who don´t know yet the book "getting to yes" by prof. fisher of harvard university, please check it out.

peace,

laurent

easiest route?
March 20, 2003 - 03:32 AM

Interesting discussion, going on here. Question for you though... isn't it human nature to chose the easiest way to communicate or to use the talents you have? (laurent mentioned that empathy is a rare talent). But the again, we wouldn't expect a leader chosen out of millions of people to lack the talent of empathy or the willingness to communicate without force. Out of curiosty what way would have been good to communicate?

GETTING STARTED
March 25, 2003 - 06:22 AM

First i tell you about me and my languages. I speak Afrikaans,English and SeSotho and bit ISiZulu and Sepedi. I go to a afrikaans medium of intruction school(this means we learn everything in afrikaans language, the 2 subjects we dont do in afrikaans is english and sesotho). My family speaks english but there werent english medium school close enough there was one in a rural town in potgietersrus (now mokopane) and some few far apart. So I just carried with afrikaans to high school.

Afrikaans is spoken in SA, Namibia and other countries. It an african version of nederlands (Dutch). It has 60% roots in nederlands,40% from english and deutsche, some bits of francaise etc.Theres 11 official languages in my country viz Afrikaans, English, ISiNdebele, ISiXhosa, ISiZulu, SePedi, SeSotho, SiSwati, TshiVenda and XiTsonga. Most people speak 3 languahes or more. From Afrikaans,ISiZulu, SeSotho etc came "young"unoficial language,Tsotsi Taal spoken from Atlantic to Indian oceans,Cape Town to Musina.

Afrikaans was created in 1900s by non-british europeans (nederland, austria, deutscheland etc) as a form of identity. I believe they identified themselves PEOPLE living in africa and didnt want to be identifid europeans living in africa.same way they created their own language.
Most people who speak afrikaans are also known as boers (farmers)maybe cos when europeans arrived they conquered land and started farming it.

I m encouraged by a post written about Yoruba here in TIG.

Some useful words in Afrikaans
1. Good morning - goeie more [morrr air]
2. How are you - hoe gaan dit [hoo g!aan dirt]
3. Fine thanks and you - goed dankie en u [g!ood dunkey en ee]
4. where are you off to - waar gaan jy [vaa gaan yay]
5. I - ek
6. go - gaan [difficult to describe, can you speak sesotho (g or kg), espanol (j) or nederlands (g or ch)]
7. talk - praat
8. thank you - dankie [dunkey]
9. nice - lekker
10. food - kos
11. water - water [vuht-air]
12. write - skryf [scrayf]
13. number - nommer [nohmerr]
14. name - naam [num]
15. girl - meisie [maysee]
16. forget - vergeet [ferrrg!eyet]
17. please - asseblief
18. want - soek [sook]
19. letter - brief
20. peace - vrede [free-year-deh]
21. who - wie [vee]
22. what - wat [vut]
23. why/how come - hoekom [hookom]
24. language - taal
25. youth - jeug
30. I want someone to write other languages too and teach us a little bit.

You must always emphasise the 'rrr',dont just swallow pronounce it. W must sound like V. V must sound like F. J must sound like Y,And T must be emphasised and sharp. The same was as in isizulu and i'T'aliano or sesotho.

Goed so here en dames ek is op pad! pleaz try to "skyrf" this in your own phonetic and post it)
Good then ladies and gents Im out!

I wish there was only one language... I mean it's kind of annoying how some persons talking another language, you don't know if he or she is talking about you, planning something suspicious, or swearing in their language, why can't we all just talk one language? One of my idiotic friends laugh at all the indian songs, it's stupid. Indian people respect chinese culture celebrations why doesn't that moron respect theirs? He's the only one laughing... What happened was there was a cultural talent show in our school, when it came to indian dances, songs etc., "Hahahahahahahha" was all you could hear from that idiot. I mean he's not really rascist, but come on, respect other cultures on their celebrations.

Do you think having one language would solve a lot of the on going issues today (conflict..especially)? There is an intersting piece of artwork about what if the world was blue. Check it out. I like the poiunt that smiling is the world language. I wonder why we rarely speak it though?

I am learning the Afrikaan you sent. Update you soon

"the end of our language is the end of our world" (wittgenstein.2)

Déjà vu.Jason what you say about your friend sound familar. September is heritage month, that celebrations is so so tight it showcase everything in my country music, languages, foods, dance, history, landscape, everything that make South Africa South Africa.(As you know South Africa is "unity in diversity" or "!kee /xarra //ke&quotwink So my classmate is a stupid fool and is always laughing when it is time for VhaVenda or TshiVenda speakers to do their thing "Hahahaha"he burst laughing loud.I always tell him he a stupid fool and barbaric beacuse they speak a different language and sing and dance a different tune dont make them funny. So Jason your stupid friend has got a stupid match tell him theres another fool like him in Africa. I dont get annoyed when someone speaks another language it make me wanna learn or just ignore them i know they not talking bout me.Please teach us your languages reggie and laurent and jason

Language they say, is the soul of a nation. But to fight over it and polarize groups due to language differences is bringing things to the extreme. When I hear conflicts solely over language issues, I find it hard to understand the rationale behind them.

However, we can also celebrate our diversity. I find it wonderful that we have different tongues. I grew up in a province of not more than 300,000 people, yet, we speak four dialects or languages (since one is different from the rest). There were no problems among us.

On a lighter note, I find it amusing to hear words in one language which have totally different meanings in another language. And since everyone is sharing some words of their languages, here are some Filipino (our national language) words for you:

1. Kamusta ka? - How are you/How do you do?
2. Mabuti naman [ako]. -I'm good. But commonly we say, "Ok lang."
3. Taga- _____ ako. - I'm from ____.
4. Mahal kita - I love you.
5. Gusto kita - I like you.
6. Paalam - Goodbye

Thanks Chapman and Laurent for sharing some words. They will be helpful in the future. smile
