Abortion in Nigeria

Criminal law in Nigeria is bifurcated. The Criminal Code applies to the Southern states and the Penal Code applies to the Northern states.
The performance of an abortion is a criminal offense unless it is performed to save a pregnant woman's life. Although the laws in Southern and Northern Nigeria are essentially similar, they are worded differently. The Criminal Code provides:
Any person, who, with intent to procure miscarriage of a woman whether she is or is not with child, unlawfully administers to her or causes her to take any poison or other noxious thing, or uses any force of any kind, or uses any other means whatever is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for fourteen years.
Moreover, a woman who with the intention to "procure" her own "miscarriage" unlawfully "administers to herself any poison ... or uses any force of any kind ... or permits any such thing or means to be administered" is liable for seven years imprisonment. The Penal Code also regards the performance of most abortions as a criminal act. It states that any person who "voluntarily causes a woman with child to miscarry" is punishable by imprisonment. A woman who causes herself to miscarry is considered to be within the meaning of the provision. Both the Criminal Code and the Penal Code impose a penalty of 14 years of imprisonment for the performance of an abortion. Criminal law permits the performance of an abortion necessary to save a woman's life. The Criminal Code stipulates that a person "is not criminally responsible for performing in good faith and with reasonable care and skill a surgical operation ... upon an unborn child for the preservation of the mother's life." Similarly, the Penal Code permits an abortion to save the life of a woman.
Laws cover other abortion-related offenses. For example, in Southern Nigeria, the Criminal Code provides that it is illegal to supply materials knowing that they may be used to produce an abortion. The punishment for this crime is three years of imprisonment. The Penal Code provides that any person who, with intent to cause a miscarriage, undertakes any act that causes a woman's death is subject to imprisonment for 14 years. It also makes it unlawful for a person to "use force to any woman and thereby unintentionally caus[e] her to miscarry."

thats really not fair for the woman! i mean wut if she cannot take care of a newborn for personal issues such as money problems or shelter and just isnt ready for a responsibility of being a mother?! they would still have to take the responsibility. even though abortion is some what like killing a human being, shouldnt the mother have her own say to it?! its her child! i really feel sry for nigerian mothers. for my chinese culture, parents value boys more than girls so its hard to earn a parent's love. but we still have a right to say if i want to keep my baby or not. girls still have rights and priviledges just that we are more expected to do certain things. we are expected to clean and do the household chores while then men can go out and learn and earn money. though it is different now, some families in china still carry the tradition of "boys are smarter and better than girls". its really hard for the girl in the family if they have a brother because they would have to do more chores than their sibling(s) and be kind of less loved by their parents. girls nowadays in china have proved that girls can be smarter than boys but for some reason, people just dont get the msg! wutever boys can do and be, girls can! just because we are girls doesnt mean all we noe how to deal with is household skills but we are athletic. we are smart. we can be sucessful people and we are just as good as boys! many people judge and expect girls to just be those really girly girls and all day just care about their nails but its not like that. a lot of successful people in this world are girls! we play all the sports guys play and some of us are even more skilled than the boys! its just not fair for the ways girls are treated these days! girls shud be equal to boys!!!!

Abortion is not "like" killing a human being, it IS killing a human being.
Why don't you feel sorry for the millions of babies aborted each year?
Do you know how they are aborted? Ripped limb from limb, or chemically scalded to death! Some even partially deliver the baby, not letting its head come out (because they couldn't do anything then) and they crack the back of the skull open and vacuum out the brains, just so they can deliver a "dead baby".
Abortion is wrong.
You want to talk about not being fair, how about the lives of the aborted women?
Why don't they matter?

Think about it...

If you are Pro-Choice as well as anti-death penalty, you've got a serious conflict.
That is what abortion is: The death penalty, only worse.
Let's say that John Smith murdered a hundred women in the most vile manner possible.
He would have committed several crimes to become eligible for the death penalty.
He would, however, get a full trial, with appeals, averaging an 18 year delay between arrest and sentence.
Then, he would be killed in the most humane manner possible, unless he requested to be shot or hung, in which case, that's his decision.
THINK ABOUT IT:
Abortion is the death penalty for someone who never committed a crime; never gets a trial, and they will be killed in the most inhumane manner possible.
Ripped limb from limb, or chemically scalded to death or the new thing is to poke a hole in the skull and vacuum the brains out.
Is this a position that anyone really wants to defend?

well, alot has been said about abortion but lets look at this critically how many children are in the streets?how many are homeless, how many are dieing of starvation, how many are committing suicide because they cannot stand their living standards millions they say thatt by abouting you are dening you child a right to live but the truth is you are deing them a right to have a miserable life.yes its the childs right to live but if you cannot take care of it why have it?children are precious but we dont bring them to the world to suffer?the children who are born with single parents have proved to have emotional effects and rebellion and so my stand is if you canot take care of a child dont keep it?but to rest my case prevntion is better than cure if you cant take care of a child take preventive measures to avoid getting pregrant and for all those irresponisble men!lets work together to build a future for our children and take responsiblity of our actions
