Guantanamo Bay

This has to be one of the worst human rights abuses in US history. When is the US going to own up to the allegations of torture and give them all free and open trials. Whether they are terrorists or not the are human beings and therfore deserve these basic human rights.

i couldnt agree with u more....

its amazing how people can just walk pass this and still view America as the lands of free!!

the country that viewed her self as the hero saving the world such as IRAQ from their lack of humen rights under the ruling of Saddam Hussain..and on the other hand deprive other people ON THEIR OWN LAND from humen rights!

its a shame that American people have no stand or say about it (not the majority atleast).

and lets ALL remember that many of them are NOT terrorists or even held a gun in their life...and where simply targeted and tortured for practicing their religion the right way....a religion that screams PEACE!

but someday the truth shall come through!..i just hope ill be their to witness it.

thank you for the important topicsmile

hi. i think sovietDragon also objected to US behaviour and criticised it. he is very much true.

being an afghan i know many people who were taken to Guantanamo Bay and then released, without any trial, and even without putting any allegation. i saw noc given to two of them, in a book written by one of htem. it therfore means that all the arrested person are not involved in attacks on America.

many of afghans and pakistanis were pointed out by thier adverse parties, means if they had any kind of enemity out of tribe, or any problem in business they pointed out the person, and US forces were quick enough to take them to bagram, and then guantanamo bay. they shooted thier guns on shoulders of USA.

then keeping them in cages, like animals, torturing them, keeping them in harsh conditions, are awful things and must be stopped.

even if they are not given PoW status, they are humans, and human rights law must be applied in every situation with certain minor deprivations.

Let's close Guantanamo!

Unfortunately the detention centre operated by the U.S. Government will be 5 years old on 11th of January.

The unlawful detention of "enemy combatants" at the US Naval Base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba has now entered its fifth year. Hundreds of people of around 30 different nationalities remain held in effect in a legal black hole, many without access to any court, legal counsel or family visits. Many of them allege they have been subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.

Three detainees have died at the camp, after apparently comitting suicide. Others have gone on prolonged hunger strikes, being kept alive only through painful force feeding measures.Guantánamo Bay is a symbol of injustice and abuse. It must be closed down...

We want the torture centre to be shut down! NOW!

Activists worldwide from many organisations are joining together in solidarity with detainees and their families... We demand once again, and louder than ever, that US government CLOSE GUANTANAMO!

Dear friends,

Please join the campaign on the Action Week worldwide! Together we can make a difference...

I would like to a bit "refine" answers given hitherto!

I think closing Guantanamo is wrong. What should be done is rather to level charges to those who are kept without charges and improve conditions for inmates.

Guantanamo is a prison, and our societies are not totally deprived of those who need to be put in prisons at oen point of time or another. Instead of a radical approach of closing it down altogether, American authorities must work towards improvement of conditions and making the whole thing "fair".

Any prison has inherently an unjust approach by intentands, guards and staff or the prison towards inmates, whether imprisonned with or without charge.

If we close one, we have to close them all, cause idealogically we won't achieve anything closing only Guantanamo. The US might just open another "Guantanamo" and keep it even in worse conditons even better concealed. Instead, if the US government was shown and led to improve situation then things would work out better on a larger scale.

Hayk,

It should be closed down. Guantanamo detention center is not a prison, it is rather a concentration camp. It is outside the US territory and is outside the US jurisdiction. In fact, there are other detention centers like the one in Diego Garcia, US battleships, and untold number of "black holes" around the world.

Arslan,

The fact that it isn't under US jurisdiction is sholdn't be a reason to close it. We are talking here about the actual breaching of human rights laws, Geneva Conventions etc.

I agree that many prisoners aren't here on just reasons. Many prisoners don't even have charges leveled against them.

Something clearly has to be done to rectify this situation...

What will give you the closure of the Guanatamo? Bunch of inmates will get free or be taken captive by their respectful countries and treated appropriately.

What I hinted on in my last post was that this is merely treating the effects of "illness". The US government might as well open (if it doesn't already have any other similar outseas "prison" of which media is not aware) when it sees fit. This time the US goverment will take good care of not revealing anything to any media, thus effectively preventing the international society of being aware of such a practice.

The cause, while still present, will have the same effect. We have to treat the reason...

Al we know of are several such prisons, and as you rightly mentionned "black holes." What prevents the US government to have more of those or just maintain those existing. Guantanamo just got too conspicious and attaracted much media attention and that is why our heads are turned towards it..

Moreover, as you clearly heard, even the condemnation by Kofi Annan, in a rather blutant way, didn't get us any closer to the closure of Guantanamo. Instead, Bush administration passed several other laws reinforcing similar practices.

We have to deal with a bigger picture.

UN says close Guantanamo !
January 17, 2007 - 11:24 AM

May 19, 2006
U.N. Urges U.S. to Shut Guantanamo Prison

The United States should close its prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and avoid using secret detention facilities in the war on terror, the U.N. panel that monitors compliance with the world's anti-torture treaty said Friday.

GENEVA - The United States should close its prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and avoid using secret detention facilities in the war on terror, the U.N. panel that monitors compliance with the world's anti-torture treaty said Friday.

The criticism, contained in an 11-page report, followed a hearing in Geneva this month on U.S. adherence to the 1984 U.N. Convention Against Torture. ....................
The committee said it was worried that detainees were being held for protracted periods with insufficient legal safeguards and without judicial assessment of the justification for their detention.

"The state party should cease to detain any person at Guantanamo Bay and close the detention facility," the panel of 10 independent experts said.
.....................

Last week, Britain's attorney general, Lord Goldsmith, also urged the United States to close the Guantanamo Bay prison, saying its existence was "unacceptable" and a discredit to the U.S. tradition of freedom.
........................
Washington should also "investigate and disclose the existence of any such facilities and the authority under which they have been established and the manner in which detainees are treated," the report said.

The Pentagon on Monday handed over the first list of everyone who has been held at Guantanamo Bay, and none of the most notorious terrorist suspects were named, raising questions about their whereabouts.
.............

It said the United States also "should rescind any interrogation technique — including methods involving sexual humiliation, 'water boarding,' 'short shackling' and using dogs to induce fear — that constitute torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, in all places of detention under its de facto effective control."

..................

It said some techniques "have resulted in the death of some detainees during interrogation" and criticized vague U.S. guidelines that "have led to serious abuse of detainees."
.....................
There have been about 800 investigations into allegations of mistreatment in Afghanistan and Iraq, the U.S. delegation said. The Defense Department found misconduct and took action against more than 250 service personnel; there have been 103 courts martial and 89 service members were convicted, of whom 19 received sentences of one year or more.

British MPs suggest that Guantanamo should be closed!
January 21, 2007 - 11:26 AM

Help US close Guantanamo, say British MPs

The Guantanamo Bay facility was set up in 2002.
MPs who have visited Guantanamo Bay have called on Britain and the international community to do more to help the US close the camp.
Seven Foreign Affairs Committee members visited the detention centre for "enemy combatants" in Cuba in September.

In a report they were critical of the conditions there, but said many inmates posed a threat and the world needed to find a "longer term solution".

Opposition MPs and human rights groups called the report "disappointing".

Their report says food was plentiful, medical care good and the facilities broadly comparable with a British maximum security prison.

But they said the camp did not meet UK guidelines for recreation and education facilities nor for access to the media, lawyers and the outside world.

The report adds that most inmates are confined to small cells with little contact with the other prisoners and few opportunities to exercise.

One area apparently was closed for repair after detainees had been found dismantling the plumbing to make weapons.

Electric lighting was kept on 24 hours a day. Some detainees were reported to be clinically obese; two were being force-fed and 20% had some psychiatric condition.

The MPs said prisoner abuse had "almost certainly" happened there but the added that this was "unlikely to be taking place now".

And they said the government was right to "stick to its established policy of not accepting consular responsibility for non-British nationals".

'Missed opportunity'

Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather, who represents a 10-year-old constituent whose father is being held at the camp, said the committee appeared to have been given "the VIP antiseptic tour".
..........................

Tory MP Andrew Tyrie, who chairs the all party Parliamentary group on extraordinary rendition, said the report did not address the main issue, "which is whether US detention policy, whether in Guantanamo or elsewhere, is making the US, UK and the West more secure or less".

"We would have liked to have seen the committee unequivocally backing Amnesty International's long-standing call for Guantanamo to be closed immediately," said the organisation's UK director Kate Allen. .......................
