It could be a mixture of both fear and disgust that causes one to become prejudice. I'm very prejudice against americans, should I be? I think that they abuse the world's natural rescources, and use up atleast a quarter of the world's oil driving their lincons and hummers, and I am frankly afraid that alot of the world which looks up to america might become like them. I am (perhaps) qualified to be prejudiced. It is a mixture of cyniscim and forsight which causes me to be so.

I think the feelings that one is inferior to us is perhaps one of the numerous causes of Prejudice , dicrimination, and intolerance.

I really don't think it's fear that causes prejudice..discrimination and intolerance. I feel the main causes are ..ignorance and having a lack of knowledge and understanding..If people would just take the time to find out about cultures which differ from their own, then maybe there would be none of the above..We are all human after all..smile

If racism and discrimination spring from "fear of the other", "fear of difference" and fear in general ! why a baby touches the fire without any fear ? why does he play with any other one without fear ?

I don't think that fear is the major cause of any discrimination !!!

This idea of babies being very trustful is interesting. Maybe the fear of others is (socially) learned later in life? Or maybe babies' brains aren't fully wired yet so the "fear program" isn't developed?

i believe the cause of discrimination is not limited to fear of others, because if so, two equal powes were to discriminate each other. while, what we observe today in this world, a powerful discriminates a weaker.

when a person becomes powerful, his needs and interests expand where he then needs more sources, more means to fulfill his needs, therefore, needs plus sense of superiority makes him discriminate others and becomes unwilling to tolerate others.

Treat individuals as innocent until proven guilty. I am an American, and I neither want America to go where we seem to be going nor do I drive a car.

I left out generalizations on my earlier list of the sources of prejudice. People see bad Americans or bad Muslims or bad Chinese people on TV, and they begin to think that everybody of that nationality is like that.

Cultural upbringing definately plays a role in how prejudice a person is. We often find that those who are prejudice against a certain other cultures have often been raised in an isolated area free of people that they're prejudice against, don't exactly know much about what they're prejudice against, and often claim to "hate" that which they prejudge when asked why they haven't tried to talk to or learn more about whatever it is.

The fear part in this equation often doesn't come from the prejudist person fearing that which he or she 'hates'. It comes from those people fearing that they'll be tossed from, or rejected by, the society in which they were raised. They fear being hated by their mothers because they have gay friends, fear being hated by their neighbors because they associate with a certain race, and often fear that they'll be rejected from their churches because they've spoken with or agreed with a member of another religion's views. Unfortuantely, the only way that this kind of fear can be solved is by entire members of the prejudice society responsible for the person's upbringing to became just as accepting...

I feel its the fear of not beign accepted and given equal treatment by the others. nobody likes to be insulted or mocked down by others.so that may be the cause.
i have seen a lot many times people dont like somebody else rising and going above them.so they try to pull that person down by discriminating him.

there is more than just intolerances why racism, discrimination and prejudices arise. Yes, intolerance that cause hese problems is some "unholy" gravity to the minds of the people. There sometimes also a fear of alienation so people try to "play safe" that turn out bad - that's the cue for such troubles to come in. Various stereotypes based on a hypothetical perspective of a person at times cause these troubles. A bit of information, thoughts and news is where such racists come up with those preposterous perspectives.
