German troops in skull photos row
Wednesday, 25 October 2006, 14:46 GMT 15:46 UK
Photos apparently showing German troops posing with a skull in Afghanistan have caused outrage in Germany.
The tabloid newspaper Bild, which carried the photos, says they show German troops in Afghanistan in 2003.
On one of the pictures, a soldier is seen holding the skull next to his exposed penis, on another - soldiers pose with the skull on their jeep.
German chancellor Angela Merkel expressed disgust at the photos and said there would be full investigation.

beside an exposed penis? Ew. That's beyond revolting. At least the Americans used living people, though both is moral violation either way. What is this, some sort of fetish?
I can somehow speculate and try to undrstandand on releasing tedium and stress by taking 'cool' pictures of the things you see, but posing in inappropriate poses...that's literally disrespecting the dead.
Have today's world totally lost the value and notion of virtue, honor and respect?

Um... don't really think it makes a difference whether the person is alive or dead - they have crossed that line nonetheless. Don't think it makes what the Americans did any better.
How did each government respond? Hm.
Just my 2c.

You are right, both are utterly reprehensible. I may add that, in fact, American soldiers practiced this kind of necrophilia -- or fetishism, or whatever you call it -- as well. For more than a year there was a website www.nowthatsfuckedup.com (closed down now) where US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan posted photos of dead Afghans and Iraqis for gaining access to pornogrophy. Council on American-Islamic Relations recorded that at one time and another 30,000 US soldiers were registered at the website. When it was functioning, I looked at it. There were the worst kinds of photos of mutilated dead bodies accompanied by blatantly racist slants and sadistic smiles of the US soldiers.
As for the question, who responded better, I think Germans did.
However, Germans are in a different situation. By looking at these German racist soldiers, you can actually say that this is an isolated case and the actions of a few bad apples.
It was not true in the case of the US as George Bush claimed to be because you have ample evidence showing that torture and sexual humiliation practiced at Abu Ghraib were authorized by high-ranking officials none of whom have been punished for this (some of them have been promoted actually).

Of course, this behavior is evil and reprehensible.

It looks those soldiers were looking for some sort of entertainment to let them forget for while the horros of the the war they are fighting. So they thought playing with human skulls would be one of their best choices.
Disgusting!!

Mmm perhaps as soldiers fighting in a war that has no real worth... or having to clean up messes and decisions made by people who don't care about people... it probably does something to their heads or maybe it's an escape mechanism...
I totally don't condone what happened, OK! But at times like these, I think it's more productive to question the bigger picture rather than point the finger at individual cases and people. Sure, it's important to think and deal with that, too... but to me, it's more about - WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH THIS "WAR" - WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING TO THE CIVILIANS, THE SOLDIERS, THE PEOPLE....
Does that make sense? One possible reason for those actions is mental adaptation to stress (tolerating it and becoming desensitised or not being able to cope so well and going insane) - but what is causing that stress? Why is the stress of millions of people worth it?

Well, wars are horrible always. You think, the Algerian civil war, or the war in former Yugoslavia, war in Chechnya, in Congo, Vietnam, et. cetera, et cetera, et cetera, were any less horrible? Answer: No.
As for the behavior of the soldiers, one explanation may be is that some neo-nazis might have joined the German Army as well just like they did the US Army. In the US, they found out just recently that lots of neo-nazis joined the US military.

Please don't misquote me.
It's my morbid line of thought, living flesh is less revolting of an idea tp play with as compared to decaying corpses. Ew. It's more of a relativity theory. Ach, forget it. I've a twisted sense of humour.
As for what the governments are doing, they claim they have those soldiers involved in the military court of law and last I checked the Americans did so, but how effective is it is still an open argument.
