As the world effort has concentrate to achieve sustainable development either that is in form of MDGs or the Agenda 21. In general, sustainable development has three dimension i.e social, environmental and economical. But it may differ form person to person. What is sustainable development for you ??

Well, I will simply first of all defind the word "Sustain" which means- lasting, so it means us having long lasting development in every aspect including our own efforts round the conerns of the world. Anything good should last long I think!

I am not looking for the theoritical answer that sustainable development is for the people, planet and profit. It is just 3 dimensions of the sustainable development. In reality, everybody has their own agenda for sustainable development, for instance, when I talked with a farmer, he replied that for him sustainable development means market for the agriculture products. I hope you all will contribute from your own side. thank you.

Just it has been said that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and so is the meaning of the word sustainable development. As an aquatic scientist who cares much about the aquatic resources, I would say that sustainable development is the development which gurantees the benefits of all stake holders without diminishing the resources for the future generations. A good example is the establishment of marine parks at the coast of Malindi in Kenya. The state benefits from tourist; the local people benefit from running services such touring the tourists to see the coral reefs, the corals are protected from extinction by these two gruops since they depend on them for survival; the tourists equaly take care not to destroy the corals so that they can come another time to see them; and the future genrations survival is ensured.Isn't that a real sustainable development? Justb like that farmee who can not use the whole of his or her farm to exhoustion because if they do that, where will they get good yields tomorow? And that is sustainable development according to me.

I think the above definitions of sustainable development are all good. I am worried though that planet Earth is already too overpopulated to ever facilitate sustainable development at this population level. Although currently only few countries with high levels of development exist, there are many countries such as China and India knocking at the door. They will also demand the same life-style we in the "developed" world have become accustomed to. I therefore welcome decreasing population trends in Europe and Japan and many other developed areas. We have had our time in the sun. Now, let's get back to a simpler life with less inputs. Maybe that means returning to the land and organic farming. I hope the Chinese and Indians and other up and coming countries aren't too mad when they discover we have used up all the Earth's resources!

Sustainable development is a new aspect in the development discourse with posterity at the centre stage. It advocates for a new form of development that will enable the current generation to meet its own needs without compromising the ability of the next generation to meet its needs. It thus calls for the conservation of environmental resources. It’s no debate where this approach was coined from, which thus forms a basis of argument on its applicability.
In my own view, sustainable development has different connotations. It is a well intended theory/approach of development but less has been done to make its applicability feasible. The poor are regarded as the most enemies of Sustainable Development (SD) due to poor and out-dated methods of farming. This has formed a very big controversy for the proponents of SD. They have condemned the poor (most of who live in Africa and the developing countries of Asia and Latin America) without addressing their poverty, disease and hunger.
SD is a crucial strategy which is doomed to failure because of its general approaches. These approaches will make it a myth than a reality. In Africa, it would be absurd to try addressing the needs of the future generation when the needs of the current generation are not yet met.
The future of this strategy (SD) lies in the hands of the developed countries. There’s urgent need to level the ground first.
Thanks go to all members for their contributions. Cheers and Keep moving.

if a development is sustainable then it means it is continous, it improves the lives of the present generation without jeopardising that of the future generation it also means its equitable and balanced i.e. its cuts across all levels of society.
