EDUCATE YOURSELF
October 19, 2006 - 07:01 AM

Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught. There are no educators. As a thinker, one should speak only of self-education. The education of youth by others is an experiment, conducted on one as yet unknown and unknowable, or a leveling on principle, to make the new character, whatever it may be, conform to the habits and customs that prevail: in both cases, therefore, something unworthy of the thinker - the work of parents and teachers, whom an audaciously honest person has called 'nos ennemis naturels.

Estoy de acuerdo. I am from the United States and while most of my peers choose to go to college in pursit of an 'education', I choose to travel to develop a broader understanding of our world. Soon I will be traveling to Honduras to work on my Spanish and volunteer a bit. I hope to connect with youth activists while there. With cooperation and communication may we one day heal our broken nations... Let me know if you have any ideas.

Education should be seen as an opportunity to face the challenages of life. There is not I admire than learning on this process I used to encounter problems that will make me to think . I love anything that will make me invent so that I can solve my problems.
Presently, I am learning how to make movie with 3d objects. I wish, I can be connected with someone who has the same dream with me.

Adding to what has been said..

I think Education should also help all of us learn
how we can respect each other and not discriminate,
how we need to evolve our learnings and understanding instead of becoming rigid with few ideas,
and how we also become change agents ourselves to make this world a better place.

Education is very important. Educated people can take action. Educated people can change the world. History has shown us that once people are educated, they can make an impact on the world surrounding them.

I do agree with what you are saying, although people who really aspire to change the world need an education to do so. Having a degree opens so many doors to the world of being an activist and helping others. Plus, it is a lot easier theese days to get a student loan for school versus for being a world travler. I'm not trying to be rude, just only realistic.
What it all boils down to is that we all need to be embracing to each other and our ideas. For the reason that we may all coexist in peace!

Education is power. We have to continue educating ourselves so that we can make the world a better place.

There are two types of education: formal and informal. I think it's best if you have both. A lot of successful people didn't finish formal education but they are exceptionally talented and creative.

That is corect, what i believe in this life is that going with what you have said i think wether formal or informal edication i know that if you want to achieve any thing in this life you will, it is a mater of positioning your self in a right direction and doing the necessary things also obaying the law of life.
but it is always good to be formal too in anything you do in this sphere.

I agree that informal education, self education, or what you learn by experience is very important important in life, but I dont think gaining these should be done at the exclusion of a formal education. For one reason, you gain much informal education through the process of obtaining a formal education. Also through a formal education you learn how to better aquire, use and understand information that you obtain on an informal basis.

On top of these, there are multitudes of statistics which prove the benefits of a complete formal primary education (at least). One such statistic estimates an average 27% return on a country's investment into primary education(1), which of course benefits a country's economy and increases the standard of living in that country, as well as other benefits, including better natural resource management led by those formally educated individuals. That is just one example of many, which include lower birth rates, better health care and so on.

Education is very important but we take it for granted most of the time. When we are self educated we want ot use our mind as much as possible. So I agree with the secoond person, I personally I would travel the world to get the different types of self education.

I feel like there is a happy medium between formal education and self-education. Most motivated people would be successful in obtaining just as much education outside of a university but it just so happens that the motivated ones go to universities and seek to learn more about the world we live in. I feel like in order to really be successful in life you need to have a firm background of what is already going on.

I think we need more encouragement and motivation in this world to inspire people to explore the endless world of knowledge that we are surrounded by.
