What is modern art?

Modern art is a general term used for most of the artistic production from the late 19th century until approximately the 1970s. (Recent art production is more often called Contemporary art or Postmodern art). Modern art refers to the then new approach to art where it was no longer important to represent a subject realistically — the invention of photography had made this function of art obsolete. Instead, artists started experimenting with new ways of seeing, with fresh ideas about the nature, materials and functions of art, often moving further toward abstraction.

I long thought to start a discussion about modern art but somehow always forgot to do so.
To me living in Europe and seeing all the proliferation of modern art museums with as much a fairy-tale or fantastic subjects that even workers of these museums are sometimes unable to give any clear explanation as to what their museums expose.
I was wondeing what you people think about it and its many facets and especially with the dawn of our modern age where technology and science seemed to have pushed anything to do with arts onto the secondary position...

in india generally if someone is very well known on Page three circuit( paparazzi news) , then that person or any relative of that person can use 'modern art ' to earn some quick bucks
while checking out modern art exhibition
in the city i and my friends always get the impression .." we can do better than THAT'
but on a serious note, i very much like expressionist paintings .... esp Van Gogh's paintings , the pioneer of expressionism.
Edward Munch's scream is also one of my favourites.
someday i wish to see the actual paintings ....

Art isn't dying. Its evolving. Its getting pretty strange, too.
Click here for something truly odd.
And this is just an example of the static sort of digital art. There is also the demo sub-culture that prefers computer programs that draw cool pictures in real-time on your pc.
Then there is YTMND, which is like what would happen if you gave a million 15 year olds Flash and Photoshop. Actually, that's pretty much what happened... although some of it qualifies as art.
Generally, I don't mind abstract art as long as it still communicates a meaning or at least looks cool. Dropcloths spattered with paint do not qualify as art!

Art has no boundries. Why do people constantly debate about what art is, and what to label it. It doesnt need labels, it doesnt need proof either. Art is something that is indescribable and probably always will be. Art gives meaning to life. Without it, where would we be?

As for me, modern art is life itself.

I personally see art as an expression of interpretation that is open for interpretation.
I think the notion of art itself suggests dialogue, so to me, it's probably a good thing that people are constantly debating what art is and the value of what it expresses (or doesn't express).

^ exactly, its an opinion, just like everything else in the world. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if everyone could just accept that, maybe we'd be better off.

There was time when Dali was considered as "modern" art. Now, Dali is rather in the same lot with classical artists.. His style is very different from others but he is not conotated with "modern art" stamp.
Similar tendencies might some day haunt other "modern art" artists, who will "change their status."
But that will pretty much depend on the level of recognition stemming from ease of interpretation of their works.
Insofar as I am concerned, modern art, as it is now, is not much more than an extreme abstractianism taken to its limit, and in many cases bordering with absurdity.

An alternative to Postmodernism is Remodernism:Manifesto of the Remodernists
Here is one art critic (Donald Kuspit)'s objection to the Postmodernist doctrine: Reconsidering the Spiritual in Art
The Ocean Series is a Remodernist response to the color-field paintings of Modern artist Mark Rothko.
