International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
October 17, 2006 - 03:59 AM

"Three billion people – half the world’s population – live on less than $2 a day. In a world of great wealth, in a world of scientific and technological wonders, in a world in which people are more aware than ever before of how 'the other half lives', that should be unacceptable… Extreme poverty is an affront to human dignity and human rights.” --UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated every year on the 17th of October. The theme of the Day this year is "Working Together out of Poverty". The International Day is commemorated around the world in different ways depending on the desires and the needs of the community.
This is a very important day worldwide. This is the day when people living in poverty are given opportunity to speak up for themselves and for others. The more that people from all walks of life experience a genuine dialogue with people living in poverty, the more likely that poverty will have its meaning and become a thing of the past. The need to act is not confined to politicians and others in power, but also with ordinary citizens like us especially the youths, for they no longer are the future… they are the present.

Who celebrate the day, poor or activitist or rich? If poor people participate to celebrate the day, then how can they earn their food for that day? Do you think celebrating the day, can reduce poverty? Just for further discussion.
