A new Vision for the hopeful poor
October 15, 2006 - 12:56 AM

Dr. Younus have won the Noble peace prize,2006 for his visionary approach to help the poor people survive. His micro-credit facility has helped so many, people who thought there is nothing that can change their fate. in one of his interview he mentioned that we could be born poor but we don't have to remain like that and it is our right to get financial credit so that we can use our talent and change our lives.

This award is a recognition of the work undertaken to bring development to rural masses and eradicate poverty.Whta makes it important is the fact that this year's Nobel peace Prize is not based on any political compulsions but has been given for genuine efforts. In fact one feels it should have been given earlier as the micro -credit has revolutionised
the concious of deprived sections and made them realise that they can work together to bring about their own development through stregnth in numbers.Micro-credit has proved to be an important liberating force in societies where women in particular have to struggle against repressive social and economic conditions.Development from below also serves to advance democracy and human rights.
Hope the movement gains fresh impetus. What is needed is replication of such models in Africa.

Needless to say, Dr Younus' Peace prize was well deserved. I watched the play back of the model of how his micro-credit program works on TV amidst tears and could not help being amazed, it cerainly could be tagged as one of the greatest wonders of the millenium development world.
Now, its not for Dr Younus to rest on his oars since his efforts have been recognized and rewarded, but rather to work harder to ensure that the micro-credit model which he developed and tried in Bangladesh and India with sucess are replicated in other poor territories of the world. If the MDGs are to be achieved in record time, more efforts like that of Dr Younus need to be celebrated and encouraged as we graduate from LIP SERVICE to ACTION in striving towards a poverty-free society, the kind beind advocated by the MDGs.

I will always admire the approach that Dr. Younus Muhammed took in trying to alleviate the poverty that's biting majority of the population on earth. But i beleive, it is also through the much needed help of his government and the trust they had between them and the poor people which enabled them extend this service without fear of loosing out in their business.

This approach would do so well in Africa, but we need support from our governments and people should also be responsible and trustworthy for investors to be willing to extend their finances to them.

This is my first time posting here at TakingITGlobal so thank you for opening this dialogue.

mmtairo brings up an important point in replicating such programs.

I've been very interested in the role that ICT applications could play in the role of increasing accountability and transperency to support private sector efforts that work with local governments AND community groups.

I'd love to see my project become a model for such an initiative that connects groups of businesses and related marketing activites to fund such programs including the ICT component to support the sustainability of valuable programs.

In fact this was the inspiration for the concept behind the stek-jes project I started exploring here at this development website. If anyone has any valuable insights or feedback i invite you to share them in my Cultural Fusion forum
as i'd love to see this help as many communities as possible. i know i can't do it alone and i invite your insights, expertise and support.

Only the best,
Yvette

Dr. Younus has proved that everything is possible from ground level if we have commitment and team work. We don't need to spread hand for the support, we just need to mobilize resources that we have. As Dr . Younus said, he want to see the poverty in the museum, which will be inaugurated by the last poor of this planet. So we have to see solution rather than problem. Salute Dr. Younus
