somethings are done for selfless pursuits, to become a better individual ,to understand why giving and sharing of
resources is very important. Life is not just a rat race. if everybody think of oneself then how will poverty, hunger
be eradicated.Gnadhiji never thought like that and India won freedom. M.Yunus
started micro finance movemnet ,leaving his cushy job behind to help poors in his country.Today it has become a strong movement that has inspired many such network in India benefitting millions of rural poor.
Example- JRD Tata ,a rich Indian ,started
a scholrship scheme to fund eduction of poor but brilliant students. The scheme gave India two Presidents.Present Indian President Dr.APJ Kalam is a beneficiary of this free education scheme and he single handedly made India a nuclear country, that will harness nuclear energy for civilian use. Dr.Kalam also gave impetus to Indian space programme.
Its said every drop fills a ocaen.Every small contribution reaps greater benefit.
A begining has to be made somewhere.
So better late than never.smile

I would say that the best person to respond to "what do you study social workl for?" is you only...if you have decided to opt for it. For example, what i used to tell people - " I would like to work with fellow human beings. I would like to be in a helping profession. But i would like to gain expertize for doing so. So it was important that i went for a social work course and gained perspectives and skills"

Through my work i have realized that no matter how much people relate social work with charity, it is important that people get trained to work with fellow human beings Jjust as you would not go to anybody for heart surgery..why should people come to you to seek help if you don't have the right perspectives and skills. Yes, we all have abilities to help and suppprt each other. But as a professional, you do things ethically and strategically, as opposed to being an opportunitstic.

Interms of career, it is a growing profession and is being recognised as a "profession" in many societies. And if you ask about money, i would say that there is anough money that one can earn depending on which sector you are in and in which country.
