On Netiquette
February 19, 2010 - 05:38 AM

Hi guys!
While ArKadian and I were chatting, the issue on netiquette (internet ettiquette) went up. Since we are talking about IT in education, we thought that netiquette should also be considered by educators who are planning to integrate IT in their classes.
To start off, I would like to first define what netiquette is. I just came from a seminar by a major telecommunications company about this issue and the lecturers defined netiquette as "the right attitude and conduct while we are online".
This is what we want from you guys:
Is there a needed emphasis for netiquette by teachers?
In what ways can teachers enlighten their students on the importance of netiquette?
We're eager to hear from you guys!

I personally think Netiquette is very important. Especially if people are going to be using the Internet and technology alot more often.
Personally i hate it when i see people typing like this..
"ohai der cn u liek red dis cos i cbf typn few mor letrs"
It's not difficult to spend an extra second to include a letter to help everybody understand and even make yourself look more intellegable.
What other forms does Netiquette come in? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ Regards ArKadian.

I think students like us should be considerate to other people who are also visiting the same sites. One interesting advice that I got from the seminar is that never type in ALL CAPS. Some people find this rude and it's like your shouting. Just imagine if you read a post like this:
"PLEASE BE INFORMED OF THE UPCOMING DEADLINE FOR THE SUBMISSION OF YOUR ARTICLES. THANK YOU!"
This really sounds rude. Even the thank you at the end of the statement sounds really sarcastic.
Another netiquette that I have learned is that we should value our privacy and other people's privacy as well when we are posting in social networks or in our blogs.
Netiquette is very important since the cyberworld is just like the normal world where we get to interact with other people. If we want respect, we should also respect others.
Since Values Education is taught in schools, netiquette should also be given emphasis. Students should treat their cyber neighbors just like how they treat people in their everyday lives. Teachers don't have to spend another period for teaching netiquette. Instead, they should give emphasis on netiquette when they are using IT for their lessons.

From my internet experiences i've also found a majority of people also find other things offence, which make Netiquette even more important in my opinion.
On most forums (Including this one), Alot of members find it very fustrating when people "Flood" or "Spam"; For those who don't know what this is, it is when people post short, pointless, inconsiderate, or repeated replies, In the pure purpose to increase their post count.
This is found very offence on some forums, and many forums even have rules against it and punish those who do it.
But its things like this that we should discourage as students are not just being taught facts, but they are also being taught how to behave in schools and if this is what we teach them then it will only be going backwards.
What are your thoughts on flooding? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ~ Regards ArKadian.

Haha. Very true. Flooding is just like mumbling words with no sense at all. What if one person approaches you and says things that are very unnecessary? If this happens to me I'll find it very annoying and disturbing. This is how it also goes in the cyberworld. We should be considerate of other people we encounter in forums or in social sites.
I'm eager to hear your responses! Don't forget your netiquette! Haha

I'm not sure if you have heard, but there is also a group of people called the "Grammar Nazi's" Going around forums and internet spellchecking and correcting people left, right and center, any peice of spelling, puncutation etc out of place they will correct it. They do this i believe because they think we should act on the internet as we in the person, we don't go around saying..

I think these people should also consider people who are not really good in grammar. We cannot avoid committing mistakes like misspelled words or misplaced punctuations. How will you feel if someone corrects you harshly on just a misplaced period? It would be very embarrassing being corrected in front of the whole cyber community. Grammar Nazis should be more considerate.

Hi Guys!
In my opinion, netiquette is very important. It should always go hand-in-hand with IT education.
When we access the internet, we are actually opening ourselves to the world. So, we should observe proper conduct when we are in the internet. And netiquette comes in handy when your are in social networking sites like facebook, twitter, myspace, and etc...
So yes, teachers should give an emphasis for netiquette to their students. Students, by then, would be aware on how to talk, what to post, and when to share.
About how the teachers can enlighten their students on etiquette:
Although, it's not really a main topic under IT education it is still a part of what we call "manners"(mind you, we are still talking to people when we are on the internet).
So moving on.
Teachers could actually motivate their students to observe proper netiquette by showing them examples. They should show them the cause and then the possible effects of some misconducts. In this way, the students will be able to foresee what will happen when they do this and that. Thus, they will avoid such misconduct.
For more information about netiquette, try visiting this link below(it includes a video and a text about netiquette):

Hey guys,
Of course I think Netiquette is an important part of cyberspace interaction - I doubt too many would disagree. But I also think that what we need to be addressing to students from a teachers point of view would be real life MANNERS.
Let's face it, if an outrightly rude student was to surf the web they're hardly going to change to a flower just because they are behind a screen and chances are they would become more rude just because their confidence might heighten. So in stating my point, all I'm saying is that although teachers could give pointers to students on how to be well-mannered when using technology, there will need to be other steps taken to ensure students follow guidelines. I think we all know what those are...
As for text language, I for one isn't too bothered whether they spell it like 'to' or '2'. Even my english teacher doesn't find this a huge deal! If you think about it, languages are forever changing. They've changed throughout history and will continue to do so. English is no exception. Perhaps technology is creating this change, but if it gets the message across I say deal with it. The exceptions are in which context text language is used. For example , U wudnt rite lik dis in an exam. (And that's not even that bad!)
What does bother me however, is when people use text language but instead for the purposes of shortening words they add words or spellwords incorrectly with the same amount of letters. Grr.
I hope I haven't made this too complicated but do you guys get where I'm coming from?

in my point of view, Netiquette is something crucial to students.
the young ages, pshycologically not-mature-yet, unstable emotion, highly spiritful curiousity #all those# should be directed to teh right doors that they would benefit the student in using internet. many ...they will get!
hence, Teachers still need to explain some point of informations on how to utilise it based on etiquette lane.
Teachers give model to students how and to what aim he/she utilise the internet to make life easier and much better!

Hi there ArKadian!
I quite agree with you in this one. Spammers really get into my nerves. Their posts are too short and senseless. With that you could already observe that he/she doesn't have any interest about the topic at all.
For me, I do think it is better to just not post at all than post unnecessary things because it'll just ruin the essence of learning, especially in forums like these.
So, for all of us here, we should observe our netiquette.

I've never heard of these guys before. But, I do think they have a good purpose though they have quite a rude way of doing it. It's really inconsiderate(just as Paul said) for them to frankly correct a persons grammar or spelling in public. Considering that the internet is used globally and there are people who are not that good in English.
I just wish these "Grammar Nazi's" would stop their dictatorship, if you know what I mean. Ha! They could just politely send a personal message to the person about his/her errors. Right?

Hi Rukby,
in accordance to Aldo Answers, i will say, besides extravagantly using tech., human kind should not use technology for bad purposes that could hamper others.
Such as Cyber crime, hacking websites, and other unpolite attitudes.
