Classroom schedules - Which is more beneficial for students?
February 19, 2010 - 05:33 AM

As alot of you may know, over different countries, there is alot of variation between how schools work, here are some examples.

New Zealand:

Start School at 8:30am, Through until 3pm.
5 Days a week
5 Classes a day (6 in total)
1 Hour lunch time
20 minute interval
55 minutes a class

Australia:

Junior:
Start School at 10:30am, Through until 4:05pm.
4 Classes a day
40 minutes lunch time
0 minute interval
70 minutes per lesson

Senior:
Start School at 7:30am, Through until 12:55pm.
4 Classes a day
40 minutes lunch time
0 minute interval
70 minutes per lesson

--------------------------------------

So what i would like to know is...

1, How your school works
2, If you think it is better / worse then these
3, Why you think this..
4, A suggestion to your ideal time table!!

Thanks!

Re: Classroom schedules - Which is more beneficial for students?

In the Philippines, most schools start their classes at 7:30 am. This goes on until 5 pm. We have classes for 5 days a week. We also get to have a 1 hour lunch break and 20 min recess time. Sometimes, we go to school on Saturdays to compensate suspended classes. Normally, students begin their elementary schooling at the age of 6. They then begin high school at the age of 12 and finish at 16. Most college courses require 4 years minimum. I have noticed that schooling here in the Philippines takes less time than in other countries but our schedules are more crammed up.

In my point of view, I think this is one of the problems here in our country. The government thinks that they could save more money with less school years but they are not seeing that this has been a major factor in the performance of the students in school. What I'm saying is that since Filipinos have schedules crammed up with more subjects, they have less time to study and focus on each one. Students are also snoozing in class because they get less sleep time (I've been one of them smile) This affects their participation in class.

I cannot blame the government for this system since we do not have enough resources to have a curriculum like the other countries. A change in the system would also take many years to be implemented because of the expected oppositions from different sectors. But personally, I think this is one initiative that the government should take if it wants the educational system in the Philippines to improve just like in more developed countries.

However, I could also see a bright side in our system. Students are trained to be more flexible and persevering. They also get to be more resilient in facing problems.

What I think should be done by our government is to lessen subjects so that class hours will also be lessened. Educators should see to it that what they will include in their curricula is relevant and important to the daily lives of the students.

Ahh i see.

We start primary school at the age of 5 here, until 10 - 11, then we have intermediate for 2 years, and then high school for 5 years.

Depending on the university coarse thy can take from 2 - 10 years.

I like our system as it gives youths alot of freedom for other things and developing passion, But it also lets students slack off easily and still get by. Not optimizing their education.

But it is very interesting, Thank you for reply.

You also have school on saturdays for suspended classes? What are these?

Yeah. When some classes are suspended because of typhoons or other calamities, we have to go to school on Saturdays just to compensate for these days. I remember the time when the AH1N1 virus scare was already spreading. The government suspended our classes for 2 weeks! It was really great to have such a long break. However, we had to spend our days studying during Saturdays for the next weeks that came. I really hate going to school on Saturdays because I get to lose one of my weekend days which I should have spent resting.

I'm quite amazed that you don't have this in your country. How are you compensating for days where classes are suspended?

Well our school only goes from 8:30pm - 3pm so if we miss a day, we have only fallen behind slightly, So we are simply expected to catch up ourselves and if we have problems later down the track or want to catch up then we need to organize to do so.

But for some classeswe can get so far ahead it wont matter.

For example; In my computer class, i completed my 3 senior years in my last junior year, and i fully exhausted my schools resources for computing, so now im 3 years ahead of my class.

Can you excell like this?

That's great. I never heard of someone getting extra credits in public schools. We really have to go with the flow of the curriculum. I think it would be better if we also get to have advance credits here in the Philippines. Students who are really excelling deserve this. It's also very rare to hear someone being accelerated here even though many students are really exceptional.

However, exceptional students get to enjoy enrollment in programs with special curricula as compared to the normal student curriculum. I belong to a program in our school which is called the Special Science Program. We had to take an exam first before we enrolled. In our curriculum, we get to have advance subjects. Now that I am in my fourth year in high school, I get to enjoy studying Calculus which is regularly taught to College students here in the country. We also have programs for those excelling in Arts and in Sports in our school. These students spend 2 hours a day for their respective specializations. We, Science students, also have specializations like Advance Chemistry. I must also say that selection into any of these programs is very hard because of the qualifying exams. Limited slots are also available.

This is how it goes here in the Philippines. How about in your country?

We simply choose our classes at the end of a school year for the next year, For certain classesit requires particular grades, and we have a set of "Excellence" classes which needs specific grades and teach recommendation. So basically if a student chooses to take a subject, they can. and how they choose to excel in it is up to them.

An example of this was, In my first 2 years of highschool, i excelled in Physical Education and sports, so much that i could afford to skip a my third year and do computers instead, and then in my fourth year i could still go back into the Elite sportsman class because of my previous performance.

Its mind boggling the amount of dicipline you have compared to our school haha

Wow. That's very great. Another problem here in the country is that some subjects are not really relevant to the career choice of the students. I think Filipinos should be given freedom to choose their subjects too (in the high school level). This will ensure that the students will have enthusiasm in their studies and that every class that they will take will be relevant to their jobs in the future.

I really envy your system. I hope that someday, the generation after us will get to enjoy a better educational system. smile

Like what TPAM said, the curriculum in the Philippines is quite different. We only have four years of high school, in the first place unlike the 3-year-junior-and-3-year-senior high school system in other countries.

In my case, during high school, our classes would start at 7:30am, recess is usually at 9:20am - 9:30am. Lunch begins at 12:00nn and ends 1:00pm. Classes end by 4:20pm. A subject would last 50 minutes in my case.

There are still club activities after that. And sometimes there are Saturday classes, too, for supplemental lessons.

I dunno with Gabrielle, but during high school, we were able to choose our electives (like Advanced Math, Advanced Computer, Health Sciences, Fundamentals of Engineering, etc.) so if you already decided which course to take in college, you could take those electives in high school already.

Well where I come from different schools have totally different schedules. The one my school follows is mainly used in preparatory schools.

Classes start at 9am sharp and end at around 2pm. There are 8 periods in one day and recess is at around 11.30am and lasts for 15-20 minutes . Up till the 8th grade, students are busy during all 8 periods. In the 9th students choose what subjects they want to take for their O'levels and only do the classes that they have. And each class is around 35 minutes. The duration changes slightly between winter and summer.

@Arkadian

I like the 70 minutes format you have. It gives a lot of time for students to focus on one subject. That's sorta difficult here because students have around 7-10 subjects minimum for their O level examinations and class durations need to be cut down. Also students get bored in long classes. But that is principally teachers' fault because they do not give a good enough effort to allure and interest students.

What I'm saying is in public high schools (at least in our school smile). We don't exercise any privileges like yours.

The schedule in our school(Baguio City National High School-Special Science Program) here in the Philippines is:

-Classes starts at 7:30am and ends at 5:00pm.
-Our classes are taken 5 times a week.
-We have 8 classes a day.
-We have a 20 minute recess.
-We also have a 1 hour lunch break.
-No time intervals in between classes at all.
-1 hour a class

For me, I think this schedule is better compared to others(no offense). This is because through this schedule we actually learn to value time. "Time is gold" as we all say. smile

It's good that you had the freedom to choose your own electives when you were in high school. It would really give you an edge over the others in your course and extra knowledge too.

In our school, we don't have the privilege to choose our own electives. There are already fixed electives for every year level and program. As for me, a 4th year(Senior) from the Special Science Program, our elective is Electronics.
