refugee crisis in pakistan

i'm helping out a couple friends at my school who want to start something on campus for afghan refugees in pakistan. we want to do a fundraiser to raise money, and also discussion forums to talk about the issue and inform others of what's going on.
we need help!
- we want the money raised to go to some kind of program within the refugee camps for children. we want to make sure the money goes to the children. i've been doing research, but does anyone know of organizations/groups doing such programs that are in need of financial assistance?
- we would love to hear your perspectives on the refugee crisis, especially from those of you living in that area.
- does anyone else have the time to help raise money too? maybe we could do a collaborative effort?
we want to make other aware of what's going on and the problems that the countries in the area, not just Afghanistan, are facing, and also make them more aware of what the Afghan people are really like, not what the Taliban are. what do you think?
some fundraiser ideas we have are:
- holding a formal dinner on campus. students would buy tickets for $7 or $8 each and come to a formal sit-down dinner. we would like to get food from Afghan restaurants in Boston.
- a small benefit concert
- donations
so many projects going on, i'm getting confused! yet it's so essential that is all be done soon...

STEP 1. identify friends who have special talents .. STEP 2. sign them up to perform in a benefit concert/event -- get venue donated .. STEP 3. publicize widely .. STEP 4. charge adults/teachers $50 per ticket for the cause... STEP 5. send money order straight to Afgan village representatives ...
ill take 2 tickets please

great idea - maybe you could chuck in a brief explanation of what they (the refugees) are going through.
Perhaps tell them what America has/hasnt done to cause/avert this crisis.
ciao.

thanks for your ideas! Ovais and I have been chatting and are starting on it.
For a couple minutes this afternoon, when the bombing of Kabul starting, I was afraid this wouldn't work, that we shouldn't even try. Almost as if the world should come to a halt because of something like that. But then I realized that was a dumb idea, and that we have to keep going, faster than ever!
Young: I think we're going to try to arrange the benefit concert - I don't know about the $50 a ticket though
I'll keep you posted on our progress! In the meantime, if anyone can help, please let us know!

---------
Some interesting numbers from YouthNoise:
257 Number of every 1,000 children born in Afghanistan who die before their 5th birthday.
3.5 Number of every 1,000 children born in the U.S. who die before their 5th birthday.
1 Number of doctors for every 50,000 people in Afghanistan.
140 Number of doctors for every 50,000 people in the United States.
39 Percent of Afghan boys enrolled in school.
98 Percent of American boys enrolled in school.
3 Percent of Afghan girls enrolled in school.
97 Percent of American girls enrolled in school.
1-1.5 million Number of Afghans killed in the fighting since 1979.
268 Number of American casualties in the Gulf War.
50,000 Number of Afghan children working on the streets of Kabul alone.
300,000 Number of homeless youth in the U.S. each year.
10 million Number of live landmines still buried in Afghanistan. (That's one for every 2.4 people in the country!)
3 million Number of Afghan refugees living in Pakistan and Iran.
1,146,400 Number of refugees from various countries living in the United States.

Emily, I hope that the benefit works out! Holding concerts are one of the best ways of raising money; I recommend $10 at the most.
If you hold a dinner, it'd be cool if you could rent out a hall (or talk to the landlord-types and see if you can get it for free), and get the Afghani restaurant cater, and you guys could serve, bring up some ethnic entertainment, cook, etc! You could trade recipes! Do they have belly dancing in Afghanistan? (That's actaully what I'm planning on being for Halloween.)
These are excerpts taken from an article on G7 Welcoming Committee. This is from their most recent article--a pretty interesting article--by Michael Albert posted Oct 7:
According to the CIA Fact Book the population of Afghanistan, a few months back, was just under 27 million people. Life expectancy at birth was 47 years.
In the whole country, there were 24 kilometers of railroad and under 3,000 kilometers of paved road, or roughly the same as a single highway across the U.S.
Weeks back, the UN and other international AID agencies announced that without a substantial effort at relief this winter could see up to 7 million deaths from starvation.
We have begun dropping along with the bombs enough food to feed about 30,000 people a day, one out of every 100 to 200 of those at risk, assuming it continues. Asked whether food was dropped in Taliban regions its been reported that the answer offered was no, so, supposing that was accurate, we are dropping the food in regions covering about 10% of the country.

situation critical..

situation in pakistan had been quite disturbingly mixed up.. and is equally critical.
ppl here are "waiting" for an attack from india.. and riots and protests continue through out with the very "MINUTE" vocal extremist minority...
things are really mixed up but things are going on the right path now..a s the strikes are begning to slow down.. schools have been reopened and there seems to be a trend towards peace.. as far as the refugee problem is concerned.. i will be riting an article soon.. as it is really begining to be a HUGE problem for pakistan.. 1.4 million refugees approx. are in pakistan.. and 10,000 are stranded on the no mans land on the pak-afghan border.. there is an influx of ppl hurt during the bombings.. and now there has been a scarcity of medicine along with food and shelter.. the comming harsh winter horifies..
i still havent been able to get in contact with unicef.. but we at our school are arranging a bake sale on the comming tuesday to do some fundraising.. it would be really nice if you ppl would join up your school along with ours ( maybe the prinicipals could come in contact) and we do this as one ?? please reply guys..
so in that ways.. we could send in the money in total.. whdya say ??
Ovais....
