Adhiambo & Erioch,
Put our houses in Order is top priority and certainly needing alot more emphasis!

What I think is that if current governments do not give the youth a chance to rights such as freedom of speech among others, then it will be taking alot longer than we even hope to put these houses in Order.
Its like a circle where one thing totally depends on another. We have corrupt leaders lets just agree, and they have literally refused to give up power to any young and fresh blood who might have no idea what is going on, which may be a terrible thing, but who knows? Change is always good and always comes with pros and cons.
So we have leaders who have been in parliament since we were babies, some not even born, and they have accumulated a wealth of corrupt ways in all areas. How can we even think we are anywhere near cleaning and putting our houses in order?

Fresh blood would mean, trying absolutely new measures for various challenges already facing Africa, which in turn may turn out to be good or even bad. But at least something not related to the offshore accounts that have been being stashed overseas for years now.
That way, the deepest darkest corruption would be uncovered!
Have a fabulous day!

Thank you for putting it very clearly. We are striving to get that and I believe that very soon we shall succeed. Have a nice time too.

Yes actions speak louder than words....it's in times like this that you realise that...that is true!
Please everyone take a chance to think about this........the main reason why africa is not developing is because of SELFISHNESS! I have said this before and i'll say it again. Majority of africans are naturally selfish......they only care about thier success and that of those close to them.....so the poorer get poorer and the rich get richer!
What can government do? Well they can start by involving the youth first of all:
"Young people should be at the forefront of global change and innovation. Empowered, they can be key agents for development and peace. If, however, they are left on society's margins, all of us will be impoverished. Let us ensure that all young people have every opportunity to participate fully in the lives of their societies."
-- Kofi Annan
Clearly governments aren't doing enough in trying to involve the youth...and without the educating the future leaders of tomorrow as a continent we have nothing but a full house of incopetence and GREED!
I mean look at Zambia!....it supplies majoirty of the water in southern africa and instead of captalising on that and other resources (e.g the oil discovered!) to become one the fatest developing countries in africa....they choose to let foreigners (e.g chinees investors) do their work, just thinking about this is absolutely heart-rending!
I would like to believe that majoirty of African countries are christian: which is shockingly a big problem and to a certain extent misunderstanding of some theories a hindrance to development! DO NOT say......GOD chooses the leaders for goodness sake.......or leaders chosen by God. Tell me something was Mugabe ever on the list of potential candidates in his book....NO.....i dont think so! God helps those who help themselves so when choosing your leaders......vote WISELY and no that you vote vounts to a bigger magine than the term suggests!

Need I say more? You have said almost everything I could have said and hope that others will get to know the issues at stake. We are equally working on the processes to get involved and informed by inspiring other leaders of like minds to do something towards getting the youth involved.

Nalukui!
Yes you hit the nail right on the head!
SELFISHNESS is a big disease rampanging our Beloved Continent. We have forgotten any policies that may be in effect and have put forward our own selfish ways.....that is why when we receive aid and grants, instead of them money being used for its rightful purposes, its driven to the very places that do not even need further cash.
A small example, when i decided to leave the country and pursue studies abroad, I tried to get a government scholarship. I walked into Saitoti's office and into Kamotho's just by being hard headed! But no sucess. So I left the country anyway. I struggled very hard to make my ends meet and not to give up my studies. I succeeded. But get this, I met another Student on the plane who was on a full scholarship! She said scholarships are there, you just need to know somebody!!!!
so there we go.
Afew years later I found myself in the U.S. among Kenyans and one of them had worked at the Kenyan Embassy in D.C. Guess what goes on, there are Kenyans whose money comes from the Government and finances their education in America. We are talking $20k and also people who have bought homes worth millions using government money! This is SELFISH AND UNACCEPTABLE. But who are we? we have been rendered voiceless because if you speak out against, you dissappear!
And this is just a tip of the iceberg! Corrupt our leaders are! Selfish....oh this is their daily bread....
So what do we do, educate ourselves is what we do, Nalukui, unite and enlighten our fellow youth, love genuinly as you know this also helps reduce selfishways.
This is the single most dangerous disease in AFRICA. SELFISHNESS as it has killed any policies that might be in place!

Interesting Comments thus far.

And these are my few words.

Africa is not asleep. contrary to popular opinion. the problem is we are awake but have no control of destiny as a people. we have gotten so used to being dictated to that it is hard for us to lead ourselves. The cry for revival has gone on for years, the fact that so many people are crying out means that so many people are awake already. we sit back and we wait for something big to happen, for some giant to emerge out of the rumble, a giant that will corner the world democracies and spear-head the revolution of the international economic framework. But i say to you, this giant will not arise until people begin to realise that a giant was once a baby, a baby that grew.
Everything that needs to be done will take time and for something good to succeed, it takes even longer.
i look at countries like Nigeria and Ghana, South Africa, Kenya amongst others, these are countries who are set to breakthrough the black curtain. but We are still waiting!
The fire that consumes the forest starts from a little matchstick. The power is in our hands.
everyone must play their part, let the farmer farm, the investor invest, the policeman police when people do what they are supposed to do then things will progress.

While I totally agree with your powerful comments, I think that many young people are about tired of all the opression. It is not that we are not farming or not policing or not going to school for an education, it is the simple fact that we are doing all that and then some, but for many years now things look like they are going backwards. The hope that lingers so close, looks like it is slipping away from reach

This sometimes can overwhelm a people and even discourage the Spirit of my so vibrant African brothers and sisters. Yet I know for sure, that as you say, Africa is a giant growing and awaiting its time. I know and I feel the same. These cries are just mid-term and will come to be fruitful because without voicing our opinions, then we will not really enjoy the end result fully.
I still know that the single most important insturment and tool is education. It gives a voice to a people. And African youth are getting it no matter the hardship. We are marching towards our own destiny. even if its taking long, I am sure in our lifetime we will reap the sweet fruit of a proud Africa.
Our young people are the future of our nations. Our children are the leaders of tomorrow, so we must educate them in the way that we strongly believe is mindful of all those around.
To Educate without end, each day learn and teach something new!

i think most of our african leaders are not competent enough, hence they depend too much on western countries.european countries give their local farmers huge subsidies so that they can export and our leaders do nothin to stop such actions, instead we keep on beggin on these intruders who care less about africa. its about time we learn from the asian countries who depend on themselves, or else our kids will b beggers like we aresad

Not comptent enough plus afew other things.
not willing to give up power, not withstanding the youth is ready and willing to sacrifice many things for a better life. Failing to keep their promises which they give only to get in office and then years later still not much changes, only to have our leaders show up to their local contituencies last minute before another election. Sad facts but yet true. and ofcourse our poor hard working farmers reap only the pennies from the profitable crops they work day and night for. this is all they know, it is their livelihood and our leaders are busy sitting in their offices giving commands on what should be done with the profits that belong to the farmers.....
summing it all up, greed and being inconsiderate is the order of our African leaders.
I wait for the day our dear Africa will rise to this challenge as a Continent, I look to the day my own beloved country will rise to this challenge and give its future the YOUTH the leadership, giving all an equal chance to practise what we all have watched from outside the box.

The main problem is all the post colonial nations in developing world have inherited a colonnial centralized money and banking system based on debt-money and fractional reserve banking.

So creating a debt-free sustainable public money system (where money is issued by independent public treasury) and not private commercial banks vis cental banks (neither public, nor private, quasi govermental in appearence).

Read my blogposts and share it among friends.

hi

not sure where exactly this should go bu I have a little message for my fellow Africans, Wake up.
This is how I see it, we are too dominated, dependant and vulnrable to international relations.
despite being rich in terms of natural resources, we are still the poorest continent in the world.we listen and do too much of what we are told by the 'west.
In Kenya, they determine the price of our coffee and tea; we give them the raw material, it's processed abroad, given a new name and sold to us at a really high price. same thing for the cocoa producing countries in west africa, your cocoa is one of the best, used to make chocolates in the west and sold to you at crazy prices. recently titanium was discovered and guess what, a canadian company is going to mine it, take it to their country for processing. yet another example, a plant in Tanzania was used by a company to manufacture drugs that are fetching alot of money . my point is that we are loosing our wealth.
'Why don't we come up with laws and policies that protect our wealth and control how it is used.
can you imagin a situation where for example, the E.U decides to stop importing our raw materials, what then would we do? we'd be stuck with alot and nothing to do with it.
I'm not saying it is wrong to export or anything, just lets try and add value to what we export. indusrialise, process our own raw material, consume it within our countries as well as export it.

there are other things I am sure we can do, any suggestions?

let's wake up Africa

Dear Sister.
This is how the world works I ave wondered, about the plight of somany countries soo rich in natual resources but sooo.sad is the state of their country, and its children.
We can bring difference to such situations only with education and connecting the country to the outside world as much as possible.
When the freedom to the press and media is given.
When issues r raised and debated on international level.
When ur ppl r allowed to take part in Decision making policies of the Govt.
This is happening in front of u & Thank God..some of u are aware of it.

I quite qppreciate contributions from everyone on this issue, I will also like to add that;
We Africans must wake up to reality of in the World economy. We must start to analyse our own economy without neccessarilly depending on the views of the Economist in the developed Countries. We must aspire to get the usefulness of our resources.

This way I feel we can at least control our own economy.

Wow thats some threads and responses i have seen its good to hear African youth! Africa its time to arise and take our rightful position.
To begin with we need to be master of our own destinies. How you might ask recaliming our resources. We need to control the natural resources like land and minerals! Brazil did its own land reforms and now they are bearing fruits! The problem is most African countries gained political independence and not economic independence. Most African countries they don't control the means of production. In Zimbabwe 4000 people used to own more than 70%of the prime land! We cannot continue having our economies built around debts, aid, grants and multinational companies. These companies are used to loot our resources.
DRC is considered the richest nation in the world in terms of resources and have you ever asked yourself why there is war there?Who is fueling those conflict based resources?
Its time we tell the West especially pto go and hang. We need home grown policies not some imf or world bank experiments remember they used us as laboratories for ESAP a THESIS of a Harvard student and look where it took us.people we deserve better
AHOY

DKaiyo!
That was some great comments on Mother Africa! What do you think we should do to overcome or at least get closer to ending our own misery? The pain of lacking proper democratic support from the very people of our own lands? We are now getting deeper in trouble for not being able to agree on the very leaders we truly need. Instead, selfish motives and ofcourse greed are leading the way to war and uncalled for violence. This is inturn leaving a lot of people who are already helpless in worse of states than originally.

Here we are actively seeking a way to rise up and be firm, yet still we have not yet committed to a proper or agreeable way to help out Nations develop and become independent even socially let alone economically.
lets keep this discussion going. Its good for our brains

What we need to begin with is to have the true spirit of PAN AFRICANISM as preached by Kwame. We also need to stand up against the imperialists and forces of neo colonialism. The unfortanate thing is some among us choose to be used as puppents of the former oppressors. And thus sell out on the struggle of self emancipation.

Like Bob Marley said in the song redemption song "emacipate yourself from mental slavery none but ourselves can free our minds"
We also need to empower our people so that they will be masters of their own destinies and not rely on debt, grants etc.Our struggle is different and we need to think outside the box.We can not model our economies after the develop world we need some home grown solutions and policies that are tailor made for our situations and historical background.
We also need a generation of leaders who are people oriented and not greed and corrupted look at Tshombe did in DRC, Savimbi in Angola examples are many!
We need to be controllers of our resources especially the natural resources!

Re: Africa, wake up!!! [development and economics]

The foreign aid strategy has been to convince emerging African economies to accept enormous loans for infrastructure development—loans that are much larger than needed—and to guarantee that the development projects were contracted to Western corporations like Halliburton and Bechtel. Once these African countries are saddled with huge debts, the Western governments and the international aid agencies allied with them are able to control these economies and to ensure that oil, minerals and other natural resources were channeled to serve the interests of Western economies.

The perverted task has been to encourage African leaders to become part of a vast network that promotes Western commercial interests. In the end, those leaders become ensnared in a web of debt that ensures their loyalty. The rich countries can then draw on them whenever they desire—to satisfy their political, economic, or military needs. In turn, they bolster their political positions by bringing industrial parks, power plants, and airports to their people through Western contractors. The owners of these Western engineering and construction companies become fabulously wealthy. The givers of aid benefit more than the receivers.
