Your thoughts on female infanticide?
September 27, 2006 - 10:39 AM

While going over a few country cultures, laws, and practices, I've noticed that there were several countries that practice infanticide on female foetus. I've found that it's often due to the fact that the parents within these countries favor male children to keep the family name over female, sometimes to the extent of not wanting females at all.
I personally find it hard to logically cope with, but I know that it is merely because I am born in a country that treats all newborns equally in those respects.. So I ask, What are your views on the subject?

female infanticide-is an actue problem in countreis of Asia and Africa mainly because its a male dominated socitey, family property is passed to male heirs and above all cremanation of dead parents can be only doen by a male heir/relative as only then their souls get peace.

I'm pretty sure that if priority was placed in female children, that there would be a reversal for probably the entire world. Countries who have more males than females due to infancide would have more female than male for that same reason, and vice versa for other countries...
It's a very interesting concept to think of though; imagining men having to fight for their rights in countries the same way that women have had to. It'd also probably change the way of thinking for most too... I can just envision "Meninism" and "Pro-Men" campaigns within my country.
Wow, come to think of it, that's a great idea to write on.

The dowry culture is the main cause for female infanticide. As parents have to spend large amount of money to marry their daughter, so they don't want the gal.

Along with Dowry culture, there has been another peculiar thing in India. "Rajputs" in India have been known for thier love for Dignity and Respect in past(and at some places in present too).
It has been known how they will not bow thier head in front of anybody as that is supposed to be below their dignity. But, when you are father of the bride, you automatically become obliged to pay all the respect to the groom's family. You may need to bow your head as well. To avoid such situations, some Rajput families kill thier daughters as soon as they are born.
In some parts of Rajasthan( a state in India) , new born girls are still drowned in milk to end thier life.
It is unfair, how a girl is not as valued as compared to boys in India. No matter how educated she is. If there are changes in this, they are only in some parts of urban India. Otherwise, a lot of struggle has gone in to bring change in few villages of rural India.

all these reasons are just the effects not the real cause of infanticide.
The simple reason of the orign of the evil practices is that Rajasthan and West Bengal were the only two states in India were the daughters had equal inheritance rights in the father's and husbands property.
Hence , the practice of infanticide as the parents feared that the daughter will take the money to another family and the practice of Sati , as the In-Laws didnt want the widow to take her share !
Also in the north the most prevalent system was patrilineal , that is the descent is traced from father to son to grandson , hence the women is under pressure to bear sons to carry forward the family name.
But in Coastal South west India, esp Nairs of Kerala , the system is matrilineal ( till the British Colonisers came and changed it ), hence the descent is traced in the female line hence no pressure on women to bear sons and since the inheritance is passed from mother to daughters ...there is no question of dowry !
so basically the social traditions are born out of the economic situation .

I see that some people are obsessed with maligning India on account of their own inadequcies and insecurities.
Yes there is female infanticide and abortion of female foetuses by some of the poorer and uneducated sections of societies in India BUT there is active action being taken to prevent it.
First of all, it now illegal for doctors to reveal the sex of the child before childbirth in India and any doctor doing that can be jailed. This greatly reduces the chance of a discriminative abortion.
In addition, there are several cases of leading actors, athletes and those with influence over the uneducated masses participating in campaigns to discourage this practice.

The idea of aborting a foetus because of its gender..sickens me..whether it's male or female shouldn't matter in the slightest..It's unfortunate that this is allowed to happen and should be illegal throughout the world..

This topic and question is quite related with female infanticide but do you think the government should fund abortion?
My personal opinions are that under certain situations the government should provide abortion free of charge. For example, if a woman was to be sexually harassed and concieved a child then the government should pay for the abortion of that baby, if the person should choose to do so. However I can also understand the point of view where many women come from. They have to carry the child for 10 months and it is hard for others to understand what they are going through. Life is unpredictable and if a child is concieved by accident should the government pay for the abortion?

The one-child policy may have something to do with it:
Do men generally earn the same as women?
Do women have the same rights as men?
Is the society patriarchal or matriarchal?
Has the history of the culture been male dominated?
Has the country ever had a female president or leader?
No doubt when you answer the questions, the preference leaning towards males being born than females, the validity becomes apparent.
Right?
(I'm female btw..okay! I'm tryin to be objective!)
