ode to joy
October 5, 2001 - 06:13 AM

"joy, bright spark of divinity
daughter of elysium
fire-inspired
we tread thy sanctuary
thy magic power reunites
all that custom has divided
all men become brothers
under the sway of thy gentle wings"
-- ludwig van beethoven, 1819

oh that such poetry might have reached the one for whom it was truly written...
but then, it is perhaps lucky for us that it was made more public....

... it almost didnt get a public airing .. they say beethoven struggled with the ending -- how to end three lengthy instrumental movements, and motivate the appearance of a sudden chorus? his struggles with the church to allow liturgical music to be heard in a theater! <gasp> in the end schiller's ode to youth and idealism won out (was there ever any doubt it would?) pity they wouldnt let ludwig conduct his materpiece for his defness.

Sonnet LX

Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore,
So do our minutes hasten to their end;
Each changing place with that which goes before,
In sequent toil all forwards do contend.
Nativity, once in the main of light,
Crawls to maturity, wherewith being crown'd,
Crooked elipses 'gainst his glory fight,
And Time that gave doth now his gift confound.
Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth
And delves the parallels in beauty's brow,
Feeds on the rarities of nature's truth,
And nothing stands but for his scythe to mow:
And yet to times in hope my verse shall stand,
Praising thy worth, despite his cruel hand.

- William Shakspeare

or it maight be a battle cry
October 7, 2001 - 11:16 AM

Pacifism? But surely not an exclusive realm... like all other creative genres, Poetry is oft used as a war cry, to build National Pride or demonize a foe...... admitedly not as evocative as the haka or battle drums which go direct to the reptilian brain..... nevertheless - the Battle Cry of the Republic, "We Few.." speech from Henry V, passages from Churchill war speeches, whole passages from Sagas of Valahalla...... even 'dumbed down' for the 20th C in musicals...Les Miserables.

Loyalty, bravery, passion, sacrifice, righteousness, valour, honour, spirit, games, courage, history, justice, selflessness, pride, brotherhood...... etc etc

I'm sure you know the stuff...

"Once more into the breach, dear freinds, once more,
Or close the wall up with our English dead!
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, conjure up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favoured rage;
........." (Act 3 Scene 1 Henry V)

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers:
For he today that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;......"
(Act 4 Scene 3 Henry V)

etc etc....
