[Poll] One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), wishfull thinking or wise investment opportunity in disguise?

OLPC (http://www.laptop.org/index.en_US.html) is a non-profit association devoted to the production of US$100 laptops to be used to educate the children of the world's poorest nations, Nigeria inclusive.
The goal of the association is to provide children arround the world with new opportunities to explore, experiment and express themselves.
Going by the recent UN poverty ratios and the levels of education of the children of the developing nations, isnt this well conceived, multimillion dollars project mere wishfull thinking or could it be another wise investment opportunity in blindfolds?
Will OLPC make the desired impact that it is designed to achieve?
Sure, it is a welcome innovation!

Well, maybe with time it could but certainly not now.

Never, it is a mere investment opportunity in disguise.

The Simputer is a low cost portable alternative to PCs, by which the benefits of IT can reach the common man. It has a special role in the third world because it ensures that illiteracy is no longer a barrier to handling a computer. Its been developed in India. Some view that thraet of simputer has forced the idea of $100 laptop.

How are you going?
THis is an interesting poll. I was just wondering what your personal thoughts were.
From the tone of your post you seem a bit cynical. Are you?
I don't mind if you are at all.
What is your experience of the $100 laptops, or the corporation behind them?
Because I think they sound like a great idea.
I have read similar fantastic stuff about remote farmers in India finding mobile phones and the internet extremely beneficial in finding where the best place to sell their produce is.
As the simputers appear to be able to get online, I can't see why there wouldn't be loads of benefit from them for students.

Cynical..? well, if I did then why not.
This is my own way of stimulating a healthy discussion from people who have experience using these things. I believe it is a great idea but do not have an experience in using it and have never seen anything like it.
Moreover, my country is listed as one of the pilot states, so why not try to learn the little I can from those who have used it. Thanks anyway for your contribution! Mo.

I think the idea is good; however there are some questions that I would like to address.
1. Dont we have to teach the children on how to use the laptop?
2.100.00 Laptops? Were are the laptops?
Im in the US and cannot even find a used or referbished laptop for 100.00.
3. These laptop still have to have maintenance.
I'm not quite sure about this but it is worth a try.
It Just seems to good to be true and you know the saying.
Hmmmmm.

First of all, any step toward bringing the internet to the children of the world is obviously going to sound like a far fetched idea. The laptops are being made with inexpensive parts with open source software, so they will be very secure and affordable to purchase in mass quantities. So, I think that this is actually a great project and should provide a lot of help with enough support.

I am a bit sceptical about this move, but only for right now. The project is a huge one and requires good management and everything. In the current scenario, therefore, I am not really sure whether it would help anybody much or no, but gradually, yes, it sure will bring a lot of change in the world of education

Something to think about when going over the pros and cons of the OLPC project:
It's great that we have the hardware, but where's the content going to come from? Who is designing curricula that schools can use? And while some of the functionality may seem easy and intuitive to those of us who have been using computers for a long time, has anything actually been done to test whether or not a young child, with no experience using computers, is able to operate it?
