Often times when I read comments from youth, especially those from the developing democracies like Nigeria's, about the political climate and how far it can go or how well we are fairing, I seem to read feelings of despair, some of fear while others of mixed concern that we would soon crash into a brick wall.
These kinds of feelings are not unusual, neither are they wholly correct. I have discussed with many experts on political development either in chat rooms or have contributted to discussions on democratic values elsewhere, so I feel bold to say that the developments in Nigeria, as far as democracy is concerned are welcome.
I have seen a situation where elsewhere, in an effort to democratize, countries have resorted to war, some of their nationals turned into refugees in their own home country while others have been forced to flee abroad for want of peace.
Somehow, we are lucky to have escaped this, my only regret is that some of our political actors have become so desperate to acquire power at all costs and by all means that they have resorted to violence. Violence in the sense that they now hire assasins to eliminate perceived stumbling blocks in the name of opposition. This is madness! although there is always a price that the population has to pay for democracy, it should not be in blood.
Power writhing within the confines of constitutional provisions, campaign strategies that offer the electorates a genuine choice, development strategies that offer REAL dividends of democracy are a few of the tricks that those in dire need to offer themselves as salvation to the already impoverished population can adopt to garner support to serve or continue in office.
Behold! the electorates too should be wiser by now. If every one were to cultivate the real democratic values and do what is required of them, big-thieves would certainly not offer themselves as big-wigs, opportunists would look else where other than to deceive us that they want to serve only to turn round and milk our treasury.
What is required of us? Look for the right candidates, avoid money for votes, protect your votes and when your representative is not doing what he/she ought to do, call on his attention and correct him.
We are heading for the promised land my friend, if we continue on the path we are now treading, I am optimistic!!!
