Young People Worldwide Support White Band Day 3

Written by Franziska Seel,Youth Editor

Germany, December 28th 2005 - On 10 December, thousands of people took part in campaigns to mark the third global White Band Day, demanding action from their government leaders to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and calling for trade justice just a couple of days ahead of the WTO ministerial meeting in Hong Kong.

In Kathmandu, Nepal, the youth-led organization Youth Initiative organized an assembly with guest speaker Salil Shetty, Director of the Millennium Campaign, who officially launched the campaign in Nepal by handing over a White Band to Goodwill Ambassador Mr. Lochan Rijal, who is a famous singer in the country.

In Russia and Germany, young people focused on raising awareness about the MDGs among their peers. In Germany, the American-based youth organization Americans for Informed Democracy hosted a panel discussion on the MDGs during a weekend-long conference for young American students studying abroad in Europe. In the city of Lüneburg in Northern Germany, the youth-organization YOIS organized a workshop on the MDGs. One concrete outcome of the workshop was the plan to start a bigger project focused on youth unemployment, which is also a big problem in the country and could thus be a good entry point to raise greater awareness about the MDGs in Germany.

In Russia, an Open Forum was organized by TakingITGlobal-Russia, informing active young people about possibilites of how to get involved in the global campaign to fight poverty. On Monday, December 12, Oxfam Great Britain, TakingITGlobal-Russia, PeaceChild International and the Global Development Learning Network organized a video conference linking young people in the UK and Russia to discuss how Russia can benefit from its WTO accession.

In Hong Kong, where the WTO ministerial meeting is taking place from December14-18, young people have been part of Oxfam Hong Kongs Big Noise Day, which included a couple of symbolic stunts in the streets of Hong Kong.
