Nuke Talk !!

President Ahmadinejad, is saying that, his nuclear programme is not a threat to the Zionist state. He said before also, that Iran is not a threat to the west, neither to its neighbours, nor to the Arab world at large. In fact, it seems president Ahmadinejad is saying that, there is nothing hostile in whatever he says, or in what his country does. Ah, that's a relief. All the misunderstanding is cleared now. Of course, I mean, Iran needs its nuclear programme despite the fact that it is 2nd. in the world in Gas production, and 4th in oil production, so it does not need to invest in oil refineries though it imports 40% of its fuel consumption. I guess it all makes sense now !!.

I think that the reasons for Iran wanting a nuclear weapon are very clear:
1. Nuclear deterrent
Iran is within range of nukes from India, Pakistan, China, Russia, Israel and the US. Any military planner worth his wages must surely regard obtaining a nuclear deterrent as a priority in such a situation.
2. Political status
As a country that feels it should be a regional leader, Iran will have difficulty pushing this concept to its neighbours without some nuclear clout of its own.
3. Deterrent of the US
There is surely a view that the only way to get the US to back off from making threats is to possess WMD. North Korea is a case in point: no-one is talking about strategic strikes on that country because it may already have a nuke, and no-one wants to risk upsetting a known "madman" with the Bomb. (Perhaps this explains some of Ahmedinajad's behaviour/rhetoric, too...). Iraq is another case in point: following the same logic, a massive invasion by US forces would never have occurred if Saddam was believed to already have tactical nukes to throw around. As the third of G.W. Bush jr.'s "Axis of Evil", the writing for Iran is on the wall: get nukes or suffer war.
Any threat of military action against Iran will of course merely strengthen the desire to obtain nuclear weapons for this reason.
4. Belief that no long-term consequences will ensue
India and Pakistan are case studies here: both obtained nuclear weapons, but suffered only short term retaliatory measures. Both are now US allies.
These are all pretty pressing reasons for owning nukes. I am sure that the Iranian government is more than ready to suffer both economic sanctions and military strikes to do so - they really have very little strategic choice!
In the event that Iran does obtain nuclear weapons, one can presumably expect a regional arms race to ensue. The Saudis will either buy some nuclear-armed warheads from the US (which will decry the Non-proliferation Treaties as another outmoded piece of diplomacy unsuited to the modern world), arrange for some US tactical nukes to be stationed in Saudi Arabia, or be allowed to develop their own. Ultimately, Iran will lose an arms race because it doesn't have the money or industrial base to keep up - but this won't matter, because it will have a credible deterrent, and will thus have ensured the country's survival and immunity from (threat of) attack.

...all of which is perfectly consistent with his earlier statements about wiping Israel off the map...?
Maybe he has a different dictionary than everyone else...?

the latest developments on the nuke issue is that ....
it was all a MISUNDERSTANDING !
and now that all the misuderstandings have been cleared people around the world can go back to their work and relax ...Iran is the world's 4 th largest Oil exporter and fortunately the fact just dawned on the EU !
Iran 'misunderstandings' cleared
Mr Larijani and Mr Solana say they will meet again next week
The EU's foreign policy chief has said that misunderstandings about Iran's nuclear programme have been cleared up, in talks with its chief negotiator.
Javier Solana and Ali Larijani said progress had been made in a second day of talks to find a compromise to avoid UN sanctions against Iran.
The two officials said they would meet again next week.
But Iran has ruled out accepting any preconditions for talks and dismissed calls to suspend uranium enrichment.
Suspension was an issue in the past and Iran would not take a step back, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi.
Iran says its nuclear programme is solely for power generation.
'Progress made'
Mr Solana said he had worked for more than seven hours with Mr Larijani at the federal chancellory in the Austrian capital, Vienna.
Iran is in a very strong position
Siyasat-e-Ruz newspaper
Iran press upbeat
"We have clarified some of the misunderstandings that existed before. We have made progress that we want to continue," he said.
The US on Friday said it hoped the UN Security Council would begin work on a draft resolution authorising sanctions against its long-time foe next week, after Iran ignored a UN-imposed deadline to suspend enrichment.
But other powers have expressed doubt that sanctions would prove effective against the world's fourth-largest oil exporter.
