you are right! racism should not exist. it is very upsetting to experience discrimination on the basis of one's race. I think one way to deal with it is to sensitize all that we all are human and have right to be treated as equals. we all have to value each other for being human instead of valuing on the basis of our race. everybody has the right to be treated with dignity.

racial discrimination against asian and brown-skinned people such as pacific islanders is nothing new.
Sadly tho, it is just more accepted these days.
descrimination an steriotyping pacific people and asians are particularly bad...but i have to say there is a minority in all these groups (including redneck whites, not meaning to setriotype) that kind of give the rest of their people a bad name.
I think we just need to all come to an understanding that we are all individuals and free-thinkers and have differenct believes no matter what colour or creed. We need to embrace those differences in order to accept them.

All ethnic groups can be targets of racism...
I ran a search on TIG and pulled up some helpful links about racism including organizations against racism and member content. You can take a look here.
Two questions regarding racism have always stuck with me:
First, why do we segregate ourselves by race? Why not eye colour? Blood type? What about belly button type (innie or outie)? Yes, it seems pretty absurd, doesn't it!
Secondly, what do our stereotypes of others say about us? (There's a very famous book that discusses this by Edward Said called Orientalism)

i can try to give my opinion on this question.
Each human being has a set of "properties" if i may call them so, including eye color, skin color, piercings, belly button, and the rest of things each of us might have...
Now, if we look around, how many in our neighborhood might have same eye color or belly button or similar kind of things which vary from person to person even in a small society of any village, let alone a city. The point i wanted to make is that there are set of properties which one cannot fail to find among all people of the neigbourhood and even larger in the same city and the same race: such are for example skin color (lot of tropical peopl have the same skin color), shape of our eyes(asiatic or european or american etc), or hair color (generally norhterners have light hair and southerners dark hair) etc etc etc - this all boils down to a race definition which might cinlude all of these traits of ours..
There are others which we might not find common even among our neighbors: such as belly buttoms, piercings, etc - which are much more individual and thus not universal for a village, city or a race.
So i think this might be a reason to why race disrimination happens (while race definition includes certain traits of human such as skin color).
Secondly, what do our stereotypes of others say about us? (There's a very famous book that discusses this by Edward Said called Orientalism)
I wont cover this one now. Later!
H.

This issue comes to a lack of understanding, which is supposed to come with the proper education. The problem is that education have to be distributed around the world, and a sad minority of people, that have been educated enough to find power to their liking and not understanding, are preventing this.

u r right. not only blacks but now the asians are a target coz of the recent incidents in the world and especially the english bombings and the afghan war.
the reasons in my opinion is: lack of trust in religion. in christanity, islam and other religions, it is clearly stated that color, cast and creed r nothing but for ur recognition. this is asian, this is american and so on. so racism, a disease which is spreading very fast is because of the said reason and then as a reaction to an act done by some stupid and ignorant individuals.

Its really bad and sad also to look at this topic, also very interesting how differently people are facing it in different ways though,
say for instance, in my area, expatriates are konna be more like,,,treated nicer or in another words get treated with best service and locals get like. ignorance and stigma,,etc,,,,,,
The interesting thing here is,,,its all done by locals though....local people are the one doing this.....i think a better understanding through educational awareness and or trainings on Human right or life skills and etc will or can help everyone to understand how everyone should be equally treated excluding the colour of skin and background....
Please lets elaporate more info on this..?

slavery was abolished decades ago, and equal rights were granted to all citizens of the United States... why do other countries still believe that the color of someones skin is ok to judge someone on???

AotearoaMaori,
i think that the reason that people segregate themselves by race because it is the most obvious feature, wheras other features tend to be more difficult to discern. It's sad that we still try to catagorize ourselves by such meaningless things, but in most cases it does seem to be improving where I live. Unfortuanatly, a few people of a misunderstood ethnicity can increases intolerance for their whole race or culture. People need to get out there and meet others so that they can learn that first impressions and steriotypes are seldom right.
