World Suicide Prevention Day - 10 September 2006

Already in this new century there have been more than 5 million suicide deaths worldwide. Each year approximately one million people in the world die by suicide. This toll is higher than the total number of world deaths each year from war and homicide combined. Suicide is an important public health problem in many countries, and is a leading cause of death among teenagers and young adults.

To call attention to this problem, WHO, in collaboration with the
International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) will hold a panel discussion about suicide prevention at the UN. The focus of the discussion this year will be on enhancing understanding about the problem, and translating current scientific knowledge and research about suicidal behavior into practical programmes and activities to reduce suicidal behavior and save
Lives.

Cheers,
Theophilus Ekpon

i wanted to add on about suicide but i thought let me share an intresting thing about India.

In India, attempting suicide is a crime. So, it you have attempted and you manage to survive, you could be penalized for it!

Recently, there were debates on this issue but they have faded away as nothing in media catches attention for so long!

The other thing in news has been about the poor farmers comitting suicide in rural India. It is important that the factors ,which imapct the mental health, are addressed to decrese the vulnerabilites. that could help a great deal in preventing suicides.

There is a famous book, which elaborates on motifs and psychology of potential suicide-maker..

As you will read in comments some people also used this book to commit suicides...

"Final Exit (Third Edition): The Practicalities of Self-Deliverance and Assisted Suicide for the Dying" by Derek Humphry

But its an absolute must to read to understand what is going on beneath the skin of a person who is preparing to commit a suicide..
