There are four ways of making lot of money (no, i havent made a million yet):

1. As a consequence of brilliant intelligence and extreme creativity, come up with totally new idea and implement or make it implemented by someone else... A simple and rather "mortal" example
www.milliondollarhomepage.com - a 21 year old who wanted to pay for his fees at university came up with a very original idea and made million bucks...

2. Exploit someone else's idea, already existing one, to your benefit, using all your charm, negotiation skills, enterpreneurship, leadership and other such soft skills... Two brilliant examples are Bill Gates, who found an existing operating system and after improving it a bit by his genius of marketing and enterpreneurship made a fortune on it.. Second example, our nice couple of sergey Brin and Larry Page, who in 1998, all along writing their PhD thesis on search technologies, which exsited already since several years having market leaders of MSN, Altavista and Lycos, gave to their project a small innovative touch - indexing of webpages according to the number of references to them - and made a fortune as you see...

3. Discovering, unexpectedly and by a total accident, a superrich grandfather, grandmother or any other relative, preferably old enough and after a small persuasion everything should be fine smile

4. Marry someone very very rich!

P.S. Is is alsopossible to have an intermix of those above mentionned ones wink

In response to making lots of money in the context of globalization and development: It seems to me there are two contradictory trends in that globalization raises standards of living for some and erodes standards of living for others - and that these two trends are accelerated with development. These trends are also not randomly played out - it's not an equal opportunity field out there. Your chances of attaining wealth depend on many factors, most of which one may have little or no control over:
- socioeconomic status of family/caregivers etc
- nationality/citizenship
- level of education
- gender, ethnicity, possibly sexual orientation
- fluent languages known
etc.

p.s. I'm going to move this to Work & Economics where hopefully this thread will get more replies.

Perhaps I'm a hopeless cynic, but

5. Take a page from Niccolo Machiavelli's book and lie, cheat, bribe, and steal your way to the top. Kill, torture and generally try to destroy those who inconvenience you.

belongs on your list. I think that third world countries suffer such turmoil because the poor often see #5 as their only way out. For example, Stalin's mother was probably a Georgian serf and his father worked in a shoe factory in Georgia. Saddam Hussein was the son of a family of Iraqi shepherds (information from Wikipedia and subject to revision). Even in America, there is a poor black subculture that looks up to pimps and gangstas as people who managed to escape their economic circumstances.

Ipraiseu has got the right idea; finding opportunities for the poor and desperate is important. For everyone.
