[Poll] just an idea (after AIDS2006)
August 23, 2006 - 12:55 AM

I was a volunteer at the conference, went to a few sessions, GV and YP. I got a fair bit of information out of the conference. I found that there weren't a lot of information about rising awareness, esp. in developed countries. We, as youth, are fighting, rising our voice, doing everything we can to get the leaders to do something, to act on their promises. But, if we don't rise awareness in our generation now, this generation will grow up just like the last one, the adults we are trying to convince now. And the next generation will go through everything again.
I don't know how many people are familiar with the ecoMentor program. It is a program that trains high school students to go to elementary schools to give a lesson to the students about environment problems etc. I think this method is applicable to any social issus even AIDS.
I know there will be problems like: will teachers be will to let people come in and talk to his/her students about topics like sex and AIDS and how comfortable will the students be about those topics. Or how old is old enough to know about those topics.
I don't know the answers. but I think if there are others who think this could work. We can work together and maybe this will become more than just an idea.

There certainly is a need for more in-school education about issues relating to HIV/AIDS. I mean, for that matter, i have a problem with sexual health education as it currently occurs! The information is biased, the tools to keep one safer are inaccessible. It's not peer-based. Cunts have no clits. Sex isn't pleasurable or fun, it's merely a task to reproduce. That kinda crap.

Maybe you could offer to do a 'tell it like it is' awareness program for HIV/AIDS to students grade 5-ish and up, addressing the many facets of the AIDS epidemic. You could approach various schools with your 45-minute workshop/lesson plan (the general length of classes), be sure it gets to the Health Ed/Phys. Ed teacher and see who gets back to you. You may be surprised by the response you get!

Could it really be this easy? It sure can.

I do safer drug use education workshops (harm reduction) in various schools - middle, secondary, colleges, universities. We've approached people in the same manner and been met with success. However I should mention that we are long-running project and are well-known around Toronto, so perhaps our reputation is working toward our credibility in this case.

But go ahead and give it a shot. It sounds like a good idea, even something you could get a grant to do if you did a train-the-trainer kind of think like they do with eco-mentors.
