Virtual Leadership: what does success look like?
August 17, 2006 - 09:01 AM

These are my questions:
1. Are people who lead virtual teams facing the same challenges as people who lead non-virtual (or face-to-face) teams?
2. Does leadership success in the face-to-face environment translate into the virtual environment? (i.e. If I am a successful leader in a face-to-face team, am I likely to be a successful leader in a virtual team?)
3. Are the characteristics of an effective leader in the face-to-face environment transferable to the virtual work environment?
With the expansion of the global marketplace organisations are progressively operating in virtual teams (individuals who communicate with leaders located in another location via phone, web or internet).
Working in isolation in a virtual workplace can mean employees miss out on the face-to-face contact and team spirit found in a group environment.
While an out-of-sight, out-of-mind mentality might factor into a company's lack of attention to virtual teams, research suggests organisations should pay closer attention (De Rosa, 2005).
What do you think?

1. I think they have different practical challenges including:
- team is likely to be comprised of those from different cultural backgrounds and value systems
- team members may show major differences in the proficiencies of the language of choice and b/c there is no face to face interaction, there is a large room for miscommunications and misunderstandings
- different time zones makes it more diffcult to unify as a team for important decisions e.g. a lot of waiting around for others' input etc.
2/3.
Not transferable:
- mastery over writing is *critical* for a virtual leader
- you don't need to be charismatic or commanding in person, nor physically attractive whereas this can have a huge impact in real life
I'm sure there are a lot of transferable skills though e.g. ability and willingness to take responsibility for others, even when they screw up.

1. Are people who lead virtual teams facing the same challenges as people who lead non-virtual (or face-to-face) teams?
The challenges on virtual level go beyond those in real life. Notably, in my opinion, the fact that there is a total absence of verbal and non-verbal communication in the virtual environment makes a huge difference. This absence makes it more difficult and sometimes quite not trivial to communicate back and forth messages and information.
Many messages and information wont pass or be realised by mere written means...
2. Does leadership success in the face-to-face environment translate into success in the virtual environment?
Not sure what you mean here. If you meant once real life contact is done the subsequent virtual communication then yes, it is much easier cause there is some "real background knowledge" about the other party and many barriers migth be surpassed if there is at least one rea life contac...t
If you meant by the virtue of being a good leader in the real life to be a good leader virtually, that very much depends on characteristics of a leader.. Say, there are different ways of "leading" varying from the very quite and non-intrusive to quasi-disctatorship and blind-execution requirements...
If the verbal part in the leadership style of the person is huge, or if ther eis much real life contact and if the leader is used to it then he/she might experience problems shifting to all virtual way of "leading" ...
hope i clarified a bit ...
3. Are the characteristics of an effective leader in the face-to-face environment transferable to the virtual work environment?
well ,as i said, some are, sucha s writting, presentation and other such skills.. but there is always a factor of "reality communication" which might be big...
H.
P.S. I assumed that virtual communication does NOT include telephone conferences and video conferences, while these are not available everywhere are thus less standard. Btu if there is conferenceing, then things get better, somewhere in the middle of pure virtual and real life...
