hi
well it depends on how do we define "free" and "freedom".
if free means that women do not have to face violence, abuse, discrimination anymore?
then my answer is "NO". women are yet not free. but thats a long long journey. journey to be equally respected as equal human beings.
and that change may not come just by changing policies. it has to come with the change in attitudes of people. men too have to change. patriarchy system has to be reviewed!

it is difficult to summarize all about the status of women in india.
let me try..
sex ratio in india is not favourable to women
most women face abuse and domestic violence
women in urban areas now are much more educated and genrate income. education levels of woemn in rural india not too good!
there are now many programs targetted at women..many self help groups have been formed all over india to empower women
in some places, organisations are working with men to deal with HIV, violence, family planning. but such inititaives are rare
govt. runs programs for women empowerment, education for girl child
rights of women with mental illness are violated. it is one of the common grounds for abandonment and divorce
i am sure there are many more things that can be added.
it will be interesting if others could share some links which can give more inforamtion

I heard about marriage problems, young women forced to be married, families preferring to have male children.
I would like to know how Indian women who have emigrated from India feel in their new homelands and if there is a difference.

Young Indian women marry abroad i n hope of a better and indepent life. But the picture is no rosy either. Many have been deserted by their grooms for dowry, faced doemstic violence, sexual abuses. There have been cases in which the broom was married to a foreign national and marriage to Indian/ Pakistani/Bangladeshi girl was solemenised under parental pressure.
Second generation women of south Asian origin ,born and brought up abroad, are often forced by their conservative parents to marry a boy in native country and go back to homeland. This problem is more actute in UK and Canada.

i think woman rights are maybe one of the most important things we need to fight for. not only in india, but all over the world.
i think if woman are equal to man the world would get rid of most of its problems. so at first i think we should ensure, that women do have the same/good education. this would solve many problems. it would help to prevent hiv and would maybe reduce the too high birth rate.
as the second most important thing i see that woman need equal political rights... for example that help for african countries could be given to them, because i think they would deal much more responsible with it than men....
this are only a few thoughts but i think, if woman would be equal, that would have many many effects which will make the world a better place.

well i agree with Sisch, women all around the world should be treated the same way as men, they should be given equal rights, and they should be provided with quality education so that they can judge between the good and the bad,as i also belong to a developing country i see that women have much lesser rights as compared to men, they are told to stay back home and takecare of the needs of other family members whereas boys are send to schools,i think this is not fair with the women community,we all have to raise our voices against this only then we will be able to achieve our goal and make a difference in the world,in the end i would say nothing is impossible if u keep on trying it 1 day or the other u will hopefully achieve what you will struggle for..
takecare
with regards
