Heavy fighting in north Sri Lanka

International monitors said they could not verify the numbers killed
There have been continued heavy clashes between Tamil Tiger rebels and Sri Lankan forces in the island's north.

It follows a day of intense bloodshed in which seven people died in a bombing in the capital, Colombo, and government air strikes killed at least 19 people.

The government has closed all schools for two weeks, in case of reprisal attacks following the deaths of Tamils.

The Tigers say 61 girls were killed in an air raid that struck an orphanage, but the government denies it.

The government says its jets hit a rebel training camp in the rebel-controlled northern district of Mullaitivu.

International truce monitors and UN staff said they had found no evidence the site was used as a military base.

"Joanna van Gerten, Unicef's Sri Lankan representative, said the team was "horrified" by the carnage.

"These were children from surrounding schools in the area who were brought there for a two-day training workshop on first aid, by whom we don't know yet," she said.

Van Gerten said the Unicef team found more than 100 children, mostly girls aged between 16 to 19, being treated for various injuries. "Most of the children we saw in the hospital had head injuries, shrapnel injuries," she added.

The LTTE said it was observing a day of mourning for the children on Tuesday.

I think it is really sad that the international community is not paying as much attention to this conflict as others, maybe it's bcause they don't have as much interests (such as oil) as they do in other countries. A human life is a human life and as such everyone should be treated equally. I think the international community should step up to the plate and try to stop this violence cause we all know what has happened in the past when they don't (i.e rwanda).

Yes You right Kikitennis,

ther is no oil, no turban clad terrorists, no kalashnikovs , nothing that interests the US govt ...hence no great insights into " what is democracy ?"....
and no grand speeches ....

"We will confront this mortal danger to all humanity. We will not tire, or rest, until the war on terror is won"
and blah blah....

It's so very true kikitennis. I think around 1000+++ has lost their lives in the conflict. *sigh* No humanitarian forces even considered yet to help too.
