"Iran launches cartoon exhibition on Holocaust
Mon Aug 14 2006 11:40:15 ET

An exhibition of more than 200 cartoons about the Holocaust opened Monday as Iran's response to last year's Muslim outrage over a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad in a Danish newspaper.

The display, showing 204 entries from Iran and abroad, was strongly influenced by the views of Iran's hard-line president, Mahoud Ahmadinejad, who drew widespread condemnation last year for calling the Holocaust a "myth" and saying Israel should be destroyed.

One cartoon by Indonesian Tony Thomdean shows the Statue of Liberty holding a book on the Holocaust in its left hand and giving a Nazi-style salute with the other.

Masoud Shojai, director of the host Caricature House, said a jury looked through 1,200 entries received after the contest was announced in February by the co-sponsor, the Iranian newspaper Hamshahri.

The new Nazi, huh....

I’ll give the same answer that so many people outside of the Muslim union gave when the series of caricatures by 12 Danish artists regarded as Prophet Mohammed Peace and Blessings be upon Him) was publicized….. “Freedom Of Speech” The series of the Danish cartoons were sacrilegious, very disrespectful and beyond satire. I believe Prophet Mohammed (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) would not handle this situation by rioting or opening exhibits to mock any other group, but instead deal with it in peace and forgiveness as he has during his era. I do find this exhibit to be immature but hey, the first amendment of free speech is a double edge sword, have to deal with the pros and the cons.

"freedom of speech" not the issue -

I am not suggesting they don't have the "right" to publish whatever they want.

I am simply saying that what they chose to publish is in very poor taste.

The Hollocaust is not something you make fun of - it is no laughing matter

- it would be like an American paper running a series of cartoons making fun of dead children in Lebanon.

do you think that would be funny - or grotesque?

that is what Hollocaust cartoons are - grotesque.

AND part of freedom of speech is that I am allowed to say whatever I want about their stupid cartoons.

AND the leader who sponsered this event - Amadinejad.

The cartoons in Denmark were done by a private paper - not a government. The government of Denmark did not have anything to do with the pictures.

The fact that the Iranian government would sponsor something like this gives us some insight into their bigotry, ambitions and nature.

As for rioting in the streets and burning down embassys - don't worry - that is not the kind of thing that we would ever do.

an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind !!!
'Blind' here doesnt refer to any physical blindness but implies narrow mindedness and prejudice.
As Luke said holocaust is NOT somthing to be made fun of...its insensitive to the highest degree ...esp in the current scenario...

though i find this move extremely insensitive and childish , i am also finding the phrase " New Nazi " a bit problematic...
comparing the statistics on the havoc caused in the world recently.... i find Bush and Co more dangerous than others...because they have more than hollow and pompous words to make their point...they have WMDs...actual 'existing' ones *

The Hollocaust is not something you make fun of - it is no laughing matter

Right, But would mocking one of the most Holy man of a religion a laughing matter?
That would be like disrespecting Mahatma Gandhi for the Hindus and the Catholic Priests for the Catholics.

The fact that the Iranian government would sponsor something like this gives us some insight into their bigotry, ambitions and nature.

I agree. It’s rather frightening to see the government playing such a major role for such a childish event.

As for rioting in the streets and burning down embassys - don't worry - that is not the kind of thing that we would ever do.

So True. But raping and murder is more the style. No pun intended.

I never said I thought the Muhammed cartoons were funny -

however Jesus is saterized all the time - so is Moses - they are public figures.

it is not the same thing as making a joke out of the murder of millions of people.

if Iran ran a cartoon series lampooning Moses - that would have been another matter.

"the Catholic Priests for the Catholics." - Sarah

are you kidding? - the Priests have been getting lampooned for years - so have Rabbis for that matter.

But after the child molestation scandle you bet the Catholic Priests were the punchline of alot of jokes - half the time Catholics were the ones telling the jokes.

to my mind poking fun at an institution or personality is totally different than making fun of ACTUAL suffering.

it is kind of like making cartoons about the Rowandan genocide.

Anu - as for the New Nazi term - it is polorizing I reolize - but -

he denies the Hollocaust -

sends letters to the German government hoping to rekindle old prejudices against the Jews -

gives missils to Hezbullah and encourages them to start a war with Israel.

And is calling routinely for Israel's destruction including the people in it.

As for WMD - your right he doesn't have them yet - but he wants them - given his general attitude I can only imagine why.

The reason he has not created as MORE havok than Bush is because he doesn't have the ability - yet.

Well that wouldn’t be the best interest of Iran given that Iranians predominantly claim to be following the Islamic faith and Moses is a large figure and so is Jesus, equal to Mohammed (Peace and Blessings be upon them all). I guess that is how the Holocaust comes into place. They are fully aware of how sensitive and cruel it is to deride the holocaust which is achieving their goal of getting under peoples skin.

are you kidding? - the Priests have been getting lampooned for years - so have Rabbis for that matter.

So have Imams and Sheiks. Mohammed (Saw) is to Muslims as who Moses (Saw) is to Jews. And he does get his share of jokes on the internet.

But after the child molestation scandle you bet the Catholic Priests were the punchline of alot of jokes - half the time Catholics were the ones telling the jokes.

Well, almost every joke as am element of truth so I can see why. Those Catholic Priests who have molested children DID something worth ridicule but I don’t see how someone can associate Prophet Mohammed (Saw) as a terrorist with a nappy beard and ugly features. It was unprovoked but that’s off topic.

to my mind poking fun at an institution or personality is totally different than making fun of ACTUAL suffering.

I think so too. I don’t agree with what’s going on in Iran but there is very little any of us can do about it.

Hello luke.

About the cartoons. There was a very ridiculous reaction about mohammed's cartoons. And as long as it makes Ahmadinaged happy - he may organize those "respond" holocaust competitions as he likes.

I dont think all those talks about cartoons are serious at all. Let people draw what they wish
